What makes a good map and a bad map?

http://accf.wikispaces.com/Grass

The Triangle grass makes starry snow! Circle grass makes pentagons, I think.

In new leaf, circles make starry snow, squares make pentagon snow, and triangle grass makes triangle snow (I think? never had triangle grass).

On the topic of fruits, I'd like anything but oranges honestly, but that's mostly because they feel more tropical to me than the other types.

Not in New Leaf ^w^ but yeah I think it did in City Folk! I'm 99.9% sure because I have circle grass and I had starry snow :3

Snow is always pretty no matter what pattern it is though.

Edit: Sorry I didn't see molas' reply ;n; don't wanna sound like I'm attacking you or anything!! Aaah sorry!!

That's what I thought too...but apparently they changed that and never updated the wiki page. My favorite shape is stars and I love the triangle grass. I looks more realistic to me.

Then I get stuck with the stupid pentagons. >:I

So the darned, plastic-looking circle grass gets the pretty snow.

i hate private beaches! that's definitely a no-no for me.
something that isn't very spacious... like lakes that are too close to the tracks or cliff. Rivers that basically divide the town into three parts (if you know what i mean?).
i prefer having west coast, it looks nicer imo... I like to have a small space somewhere in town wedged between a cliff and river. and i like it when the beach on the bottom is a lot smaller than the beach on the side.

It's ok! I didn't think you were :D

It depends on your preference but having played for a while, I definitely have a good idea of what makes for a good map. First, not so many ponds. I have 4 and it definitely makes the town feel crowded. I would also say Retail and Town hall at the upper area of the map, as well as my own house. Retail up near the train station is essential for wifi trading. Those would be my main things.

Might as well give my whole opinion ipostalotbecauseimboredimsorryyouguys

♥Good Map~♥

-Apples, peaches, pears, or cherries as native fruit. (Apples are so cool looking and golden pears ;O;)
-Circle or Triangle grass
-Interesting River shape(I like more dramatic edges personally. Gives it more character)
-Town hall near retail or town plaza
-Town plaza close to train station or in center of the town
-Lots and lots of space!
-A private island that's relatively decent in size

xBad Mapx

-Oranges as native fruit(so common uuuugggh and every time I get it uuuggggggggghhh)
-cramped small area.
-square grass
-Town plaza placed in odd place in town, like near the bottom.

I really like most maps though. There's always some potential.

I think for a good layout for me I would want minimum rocks as possible, the Retail near the dock so I can quickly sell bugs & sharks, the town hall near the plaza so that all the 'business' stuff is in a small bundle, and the perfect house placement for me is near the ocean or towards the city. I like it when most of my starting villager houses are close together and in a line but I can fix that with some plot resseting.

For a bad map pretty much the opposite of all of this c:

Here's my towns description.

Main Town:
- No private beach.
- Pears a native fruit.
- 2 ponds.
- Circle grass.
- West side waterfall.
- Long river.
- Town Plaza left middle.
- Retail top right.
- Town Hall right middle.

2nd Town:
- Small private beach.
- Oranges as native fruit.
- 1 pond.
- Square grass.
- East side waterfall.
- Long river.
- Town Plaza left middle.
- Retail top left.
- Town Hall top left.

At the end of the day though any map can be worked with and still can become a good town, right? :)

I have a question... what is triangle, circle and square grass btw?

i love my map because:
1. my villagers are all bunched up in the beginning. I put my house near them and the campsite.
2. my retail is just straight away from my train station.
3. I have one long beach and one super small private island. i dont like private islands btw.
4. i have 5 rocks which are located near each other and I can work around it.

what i dont like about my map.
1. I have 3 ponds. even though i can work around it....it still sucks
2. I have pears. hate them. but since everyone hates them...my fruits are "rare" hehe
3. Tangy and Diana moved in apart from my main villager bunch... they moved symmetrically on the opposite sides. I call them the town hermits. I dont plot reset and everything is just by chance :D

For me I just think that having any map you first get is what you should go with as it makes you have to think more. If you get it too easy it doesn't it make it as interesting I guess? I don't know, my opinion.

in my opinion, many of the maps look fine to me and people have been doing a really good job with landscaping to make even the worse of maps look pretty awesome.

Good Map:
One long stretch of beach (this includes getting a private beach)
1-2 Ponds
Vertical ramp to beach
Town Plaza preferably in a corner somewhere
Retail close to the train station or in the center

Bad Map:
tons of badly placed rocks?

A good map is all preference. For me, I like a short river so you have lots of land for PWP's, no more than 2 ponds, Town Hall to be close to the train tracks with the plaza in front of it, peaches or apples as native front, and south facing waterfall and ramp. I don't really worry about rocks. I've heard the less ponds you have the more rocks you have and I'm fine with that. Rocks are much easier to deal with.

I think my map is pretty well placed. I have 2 ponds but it was dreadful getting around (in the beginning since I had no bridges yet) but now that they're built it makes getting around a ton easier.

So I would say where you can build a nice road if you want, and how easy it is to go around town makes a good map.

It is really opinion, if you like where bridge is, but that can be changed, if anyone's house is blocking a bad spot, those I don't take. Also if you have a preference on where retail, the town hall and everything is related to where you want your house. If you can see a place for bridges and easy access to reach retail after going to island.

Some like split beaches, or towns cut in half by the river...my main concern aside the fruit I wanted in beginning was how much open space there is for PWPs, the large ones like Brewster and Police Station, and having the camp near the station, but that's me.

I don't think as you can change bridges any map is that bad as long as there are IMO two beach ramps, and enough space, and a house spot you like, as well as no homes blocking bridge ect. My favorites have a private beach entrance and another and no short tiny spots at the top where nothing but trees can go. I also like waterfalls and diving cliffs and a home spot separate enough from villagers. That's just me though. If cycling is best to keep retail near the station and Main Street.

Oh and the big town square, being able to work around that, my least favorites have a slim left side line that has no ramp or connection just spots for rows of hard to reach houses. Vertical bridges also cool, to me anyways.
