Theres lots of types of folklore. Fairy tale, Fables, Legends, Myths etc! I believe creepypasta and cryptids can also fall under this, if that's your thing, just keep it PG or put anything weird/scary under spoilers :)

I used to read a lot of creepypasta growing up but kinda grew out of it. I do like Kuchisake-onna, that one always stuck with me. It's a Japanese urban legend, and a lot of Japanese ghost stories are so interesting to me!

What's your favorite?

Ooo. You would love the tales from Mexico. My parents have told me of two urban legends.

The first on supposedly happened some time in the late 70s and early 80s. There was this popular club in the city where they both lived. It was a typical night, when a handsome man all dressed in black walked in. He asked a lady to dance and she accepted.

They were feeling it, when she looked down and saw two things. The first one was that she was floating. The second thing that she saw was that his feet turned into hooves. She looked at him and his eyes were now red. The club goers didn’t notice anything until she started screaming. When they saw her floating in the air, they all ran out terrified.

Supposedly the woman became crazy after that incident and died some time afterward. That club also burned down some time later, and other night clubs near that area also shut down.

The second story is that gold is buried underneath the city where my parents lived. Urban legend has it that the gold was buried during the Cristeros war. People would hide their money from the Mexican army, I think. Supposedly if you saw smoke rising from the ground then it meant that there was gold underneath.

However, that gold was cursed. Misfortune would fall upon the people that used the money for personal gain. For example, my mom said that a man that they knew found gold. He was going to work when he saw smoke rising from the ground. He saw that there wasn’t anyone around, so he moved a barrel on top of the smoke. After work he went back and dug up the gold.

He became rich after that and opened a department store. However, that store suffered from misfortune. It was robbed multiple times, and then there’s the fire that destroyed it. His family also suffered from diseases and death as well.

Considering I run a mythology blog on Tumblr I have far too many folklore tales that I truly love, however these two always stand out to me when goddesses come to mind:

Selene from Greek Mythology

Selene (Σελήνη meaning ‘Moon’) was the Titan Goddess of the moon in Greek mythology who was renowned for driving her moon chariot across the heavens. One of her great loves was with a shepard prince called Endymion who was granted eternal youth and immortality by Zeus (king of the gods) who then placed him in a state of eternal slumber in a cave near the peak of Lydian Mount Latmos. Each night Selene would visit him when the moon came down from the sky where she would consort with him because she couldn’t bare the thought of him dying.

Rán from Norse Mythology

Rán was goddess of the sea in Norse mythology. Rán and her husband Ægir, (God of the sea) had nine beautiful daughters called ‘The Waves’ each of which represented a different type of wave. The goddess was frequently associated with a magical net which she used to try and capture men who ventured out in to the sea which was also referred to as ‘Rán’s Road.’

I LOVE spooky lore and legends!

I love the Wendigo lore a lot. There’s quite a bit
of controversy about what the wendigo looks like since a lot of people illustrate it with antlers. Which I believe most people think about now, which is basically an american white washed version. I do enjoy aesthetic of it though.

I also love reading about Finnish mythology and lore. They also used antlered creatures and I just love the whole vibe of it.

I’ve also recently started getting into Irish folklore and mythical creatures. Im having a blast learning about it.

If anyone knows any other fun spooky ones let me know!

Since the slav blood is in my veins, I loooove slavic folklore and legends!! Especially Polish ones, what can I say haha

My absolute favourite creatures are Utopiec and Rusałka, both super similar, because they're well,, let's say water creatures 🧜‍♀️

Some other very interesting creatures are Strzyga (like a super ramped up and scary vampire with blue skin), Bebok (a creature to scare disobedient kids with) and Baba Yaga (an ugly and old cannibalistic witch who lives in a hut located on a chicken leg), incredible stuff <3

Utopiec! I'm Polish and i've heard of this one. I believe the polish version of Minecraft has them? Not quite the same as the original source, it might be in name only.

omg yes!! I totally forgot that utopiec is the polish name for drowned in minecraft haha, but it kind of has the same idea as the original demon I think?
I'm so happy to meet another Polish person on tbt 🥰

There's one I really like from ancient Greek mythology - Euterpe. She is one of the muses. She is associated with music, and in some beliefs she was said to have invented wind instruments. A Goddess of wind instruments! My favorite deity, for sure!

I only recently starting diving more into polish heritage, I live in the USA to a half polish half Jewish family and ive been more exposed to polish culture and stories as an adult than I was as a child! Recently doing my own research, it's a fascinating culture

You guys have reminded me that I have polish in my ancestry through my mom's side... probably not to the degree you guys have it though, lol. I've never even heard of these terms before.

Here's another favourite myth I forgot to add the other day, I have to say Finnish mythology is just as fascinating as the more known myths from around the world such as Greek and Norse.

Vellamo was the goddess of water, lakes and seas in Finnish mythology. She was said to be tall and beautiful, and was respected by fishermen, who prayed to her for good fishing luck. Vellamo could also control the winds to help sailors, and also controlled the storms and waves. She wore a blue dress made from sea foam. Her name comes from the Finnish word ‘velloa’, which means ‘movement of water and waves.’ She was also often depicted as a mermaid.

oooooo that's really cool, I'm glad that you're diving more into polish culture. I do agree that in general slavic countries have very fascinating cultures - that very often overlap and some are area specific, so they may get confusing or hard to research, so if you ever have questions that you can't really find an explanation for online then my dms are open!!

So there's quite a few characters from Brazilian folklore that i'm particularly fond of.

There's Saci who is a one-legged man with a foul-smelling red cap, he's known to pull all sorts of pranks on people and he has the ability to turn into a whirlwind. If you manage to capture him in whirlwind form, he will you grant one wish.

There's also Curupira, a forest guardian with bright orange hair and backwards feet. He's known to mess with hunters and other people who take more than they need from the forest in general. He has the ability to create illusions and make high-pitched noises to scare his victims.

The last one i remember is the Headless Mule. Basically, a woman married a priest, God didn't like that very much and so he turned her into a mule with burning fire for a head. That's the kid-friendly version that i remember from middle school, anyway. Now she gallops around in the dead of night looking all spooky and stuff.
