What is the most ideal town layout?

Everybody wants a town with few rocks, a short river and one pond. For space reasons.

I disagree with the ponds though. I have five and I love how they are positioned. They make for good nature towns. I haven't counted how many rocks I have but all of mine are up in the top which is annoying but I can work around them. My river is short and I have an "island".

I also go for lefty beaches because I like the museum on the right. It looks better that way.

This is what I like in a town.

everyone wants something different. experiment with different towns and see what you like! you can always restart if you just cant stand what you get ♥ that's honestly the best way to figure out what works best for you.

I like long rivers with lots of bends that flow from left to right. South facing waterfalls are nice but not having one isn't a deal breaker for me. I need a skinny sort of spot in the top corner of the map somewhere that a villager won't plop their house so I can bury a pitfall there without having someone walk over it (so it prevent other pitfalls from spawning elsewhere in town). I like having ReTail near the top of the map opposite the train station, and I really like when the plaza is south of town hall with the tree lining up evenly with town hall's door. I like symmetry and being able to path things and plants trees symmetrically are a big plus when it comes to maps. I'm not fussy about rocks or lakes as long as they're not in the way of where I want to put a path or a building.

I found a great layout that has a little area for my place that will likely not get invaded by incoming villagers, but its 12 spaces wide so my house has 4 spaces on one side and 3 spaces on the other. A little annoying for my OCD, but I like it.

Pros:
- Train enters the map from the right side of the map and moves towards the left side of the map, which I find appealing for some reason.
- Has plenty of space.
- Re-Tail is VERY close to the Train Station.
- It has 7 rocks (I think, unless I missed one) that are in decent places that aren't really in the way. Most are close to pavement near the station, Re-Tail, Town Hall or the Plaza. Couple littered about, but are not in the way.
- Ramp leading down to the beach leads directly to the dock for extremely easy access.
- Has a secret beach in the top left corner of the map.

Cons:
- River is a bit twisty and windy, but bearable.
- One pond close to Re-Tail, was hoping for two or three ponds.
- Native fruit are Cherries, I would have preferred Apples or Pears.

Overall its a very amazing map and I like it! I wish I could post a picture of the map, but I don't know how to get a capture of the bottom screen as I do not own a camera.

I chose one of the first 4 maps I got, but my preferences are

-any fruit, honestly. Pears are green potatoes and potatoes are amazing. Peaches are upside down hearts, and when they're perfect they look like butts. Apples and cherries are pretty in general (the normal apples look like they were dipped in caramel). Oranges are cute and round, and their perfect form looks like a mom orange with a baby orange sitting on her head. Or another potato.

-Town plaza in the middle

-River that doesn't go nuts, but isn't too boring either

-Retail near the train station

omg you all have the same avatar ._.

And your avatar is the combo breaker! ;)

As for a town layout, for an aesthetic town, having a west/east facing water fall to the ocean is fine, but to fish from it, a south facing water fall is best. This also can make a shorter river which is easier to run around.

In my opinion;
- Re-Tail being pretty close to the Train Station (thankfully it is in my first town)
- Not a lot of rocks
- Minimum ponds
- No small, narrow strip of land which is commonly found at the top of the map. To me, it's really annoying and there's only enough space to build a campsite that people usually do for these sort of situations
- Not a lot of twists and turns for the river

My resetted first town's map looks like this (really outdated with the houses and such)

Pretty much my ideal map. There's a lot of land that is divided into two parts, especially the southern rectangular part. A lot of space to work and landscape with.

Straight turning rivers
Confined areas for parks,orchards, ect
2 Beaches
Plaza Re-tail and Town hall next to each other

I typically look for a map where things are spaced logically and nothing is too close together. For example I don't like when the town center thing, town hall and retail are all in the same general area, I like them spaced a bit. But maybe that's just me personally

The major thing I always considered was where the town hall was in relation to the plaza. Preferably, I'd like to have the town hall directly above the plaza. But other than that, I don't think I looked for much else!

For me its

- The smallest river possible
- LOTS of open land
- One pond
- Rocks in convinient places
- R-parkers and Town hall next to eachother
- Plaza in a corner or in a corner-like area

I have a small river and it's really helpful because I have more room around it for public works projects. You also have to think about villager placements and once all of your villagers have moved in, will there be enough space to work with.
Having minimum rocks is always good because that means less wasted space, same with ponds.
Re-Tail I prefer near the docks because I beetle hunt more than I turnip trade. The plaza in the corner of the map, I personally think it looks way better then it being in the middle. I don't care where the town hall is.

Currently restarting a ton for a good layout for my new town, but I'm not 100% sure what I should be looking out for. I am mostly looking for something I like, but I want to know what else I should look for.

I think it depends on your use.

If you're pursuing developing a town which has a particular theme, the flow of the town will definitely matter. When I started my second town, ACNLpics, I made my decision with a map that was good for the locations of the Plaza and Town Hall. And I explored the area I could envision for human houses. (I wanted them all on the south side of town and, with respect to the villagers' houses, I wanted them to be apart of the where the villagers live.)

I recommend to you this: You should have fun with trying any amount of towns that you would consider before you commit. One thing you can do is get a feel for your comfort by walking through a town; that you're okay with where the rocks are, where the ponds are, and that you like the layout of the town. (Oh, and give thought to where you have your mayor's house!)

You will know.
