What happens when you reset with money?

Ok so when you restart now unlike the past you can keep a huge amount of money if your town is good enough and your catalog too if you choose but afterwards it instantly gives you 4 maps to pick from for your new town
BUT what happens if you don't pick a map and close the game and open it back up again? Will it give you the choice to start a new game and if you do so will you still have your bells or is that all gone?
I want to start with my money but the 4 maps I got were awful...

It'll just be like not saving,your old town will still be there. And you'll have to go through the process over again. Like you I didn't like the map choices so I closed the game. And when I restarted it my town was still there and I had to do the whole thing over again.

resetting now happens when the new town is saved i believe

If you don't pick any of the maps at all when selling your town, you won't lose anything it just means you'll have to go from the same dialogue with Nook again each time you map reset but your money, items etc.. will still remain. It's very tedious, but you won't lose anything, including money.
