What happens to banned accounts?

I was looking around and I saw one account and the visitor messaging was disabled, all the threads started by that account were closed. Is it probable that one account is banned?

What happens to banned accounts? Out of curiosity.

You can't VM them, and their username turns brown.

For them, they can't do anything apart from see the ban message displayed, and when the expiry date is reached, their account goes back to normal
