I've seen a lot of threads lately talking about somebody's town corrupting, and I'm afraid one of my own towns may corrupt. But I'm just wondering, what exactly happens when your town corrupts? Do villagers, flowers, or items disappear? I want to know so I can see the signs that your town has corrupted.

if your town corrupts, then basically your entire town is deleted, and you have to create a new one.
you'd def. know if your town was corrupted lol, there's no warning signs or anything it just... happens apparently? usually if you press the power when saving/game card pops out when saving it seems.

I was wondering the same thing, seeing as there's been threads popping up of that nature. Thanks for explaining!

I wonder if there are other ways to corrupt your data. I'm actually very worried. I sometimes take out my SD card to upload onto computer and put SD card back into 3DS. I only do this when my 3DS is off. Does that corrupt your data?

No that's perfectly safe as long as you dont Touch the folder titled " NINTENDO 3DS "

If you touch that folder it may think you tampered with the data, and then corrupt it.

Thanks. When I check my SD card, I aim for the DCIM folder (or whatever that other folder is). I won't open the forbidden folder.

Once you start up Animal Crossing New Leaf the menu comes up as this.

It will then give you the option if you really wish to delete you saved data or not (from what I know), and start a new save.

On a very rare occasion corrputed data can become usable again, but can be likely to corrupt again however depending (I have seen this in a handful of threads). Even the new save has a chance of corrupting from what threads I have seen as well, but all and all it depends on what caused the corruption/s.

What can corrupt my data?
Here are a few things from the top of my head.

  • Flicking the internet switch while in/ending a session while saving. (Not 100% sure on this)
  • Turning off/interrupting the game while saving.
  • Lack of space while saving. (Not 100% sure on this, and how it happens)

A problem with the 3DS.
  • Dirty or damaged SD slot, or cartridge slot.
  • Physical damage (Such as not treating the 3DS with care).
  • A bad egg (Such as factory problems)

A problem with the SD card.
  • Poor quailty SD card.
  • Tampering with the SD card's files.
  • Taking the SD card out of the SD slot while saving.
  • Physical damage (Such as not treating the SD card with care).
  • Dirty SD card.
  • A bad egg (Such as factory problems).

A problem with the cartridge.
  • Taking the cartridge out of the cartridge slot while saving.

This was really helpful, thanks!

Here's another way to prevent data corruption: do not dupe. Not only you have a chance of corrupting your data if you use the duping bug, but it is also bad for the game's virtual economy and makes playing unfair.

Yeah try not to spread false information like that pls. Duping does not ultimately cause corruption of the game. I have a friend on tumblr who's been duping since she has found out about the glitch and she hasn't had a town corrupt. Now, injecting your own opinions of how it affects the economy and whatnot shouldn't has been added anyways because it has nothing to do with a corrupted town.

Duping CAN cause corruption if done carelessly, but it's very highly unlikely that that alone will be the culprit.

Typically a town is corrupted when the mayor begins taking bribes. I saw on one occasion when Isabelle was given a "day off" to make a deal with the local mob... Crazy Redd went crazy. There were very few survivors.

Thanks, this relieved me! I have had similar cases of disconnecting while saving happen. Glad to know that it won't hurt my game!

That's the point. And when you said "try not to spread false information like that", I'm not spreading false information. I didn't say that "duping will corrupt your data". I said that there is a chance that it could. Since it requires flipping the wi-fi switch while saving, that's where the risk comes from. That, and it won't happen if you're careful enough.

^Yea, the disconnecting while saving thing/duping causing corruption is total BS, and I'm pretty sure it was just started as a rumor by people who don't like duping. I've had disconnections during session endings multiple times due to just generally bad wifi, and my town's never corrupted. On the same note, I have also literally never read a first hand account of someone's town corrupting due to duping.

Actually, one time I was saving my game (not after a wifi session, just saving...), and it was taking a realllly long time, like over 5 mins, so I thought my town might have actually corrupted, but then after I flipped the wifi switched the game actually saved and my town was fine lol

Yes. I know it can happen, its just rare a corruption can happen from it.

But you are, you said duping can cause corruption, which, if unexplained, would lead people to believe their town automatically corrupts.

The risk does not come from flipping the wifi switch while saving, the risk actually comes from cutting the wifi so abruptly, which doesn't have to do with the save since some dupe guides explain that timing is different, and some have to be cut off before it even starts to save (as in the little rotation dial screen) on the actual saving screen.

On to the topic at hand-

I've dealt with about 6 town corruptions. Mostly due to the digital version becoming corrupted on the sd (the actual entire sd corrupting and needing to be wiped) after dropping the console and not making sure that the sd wasn't moved in the fall @----@ now I hold onto my console like a baby wherever I go to prevent that.

My cycling town was corrupted with no reason at all... No sign at all. The cartridge did not pop up etc etc. I saved as usual, closed the game, and when I came back it says that the data was corrupted. It was a psychical copy by the way.

I deleted the corrupted data, and started a new town. I left it for a week after that.

But after a week the old data somehow restored itself o_o That was creepy, but more than welcome haha xD I have been regularly checking the town ever since, and nothing weird is happening. I've been told that it's a rare case though.

So maybe after corruption, maybe it's worth to try rebooting the system or leave the game for a while?

I know it's an inconvenience that the wi-fi disconnects while saving, but at least data corruption is rare there.

I just talked to my mom about giving me a powersave, just in case my towns corrupt. (Especially LuzDale, LuzDale was a gift from my aunt which I've owned for almost a year now!)
