What does it mean when a villager places a clothing item in their home instead of putting it in storage?

I gave Agnes a pink hat (she likes pink) and she placed it in her home. She didn't wear it for the longest time and then one day she wore it and I haven't seen it since. So what does that mean? Are they placing the clothes because they really like it or because they don't actually like it at all? Are they less likely to wear clothes they place in their home?

in my experience, they are less likely to wear clothes that they display in their house and also that villagers without closets display clothing instead. agnes doesn;t have a closet iirc.
they can also display dupes of the same clothing item. rip 😭

I gave Kitty a chic mum crown and she wore it right away. The next time I saw it, it was displayed in her home and she never put it on until I gave her something else to replace it. Now she wears it quite often.

In my experience, even villagers without wardrobes will store shirts/dresses away/not in their house as long as they like them, but mine have been generally more likely to display accessories/hats & glasses I give them. Rarely, if ever, do I see them display shirts or dresses on mannequins. But if you give them furniture and it goes in the place of where they displayed clothing, they'll start wearing that thing again.

To add, I suspect that them suddenly wearing something they haven't touched in a long time - this also applies to villagers who hang clothes on the wall - may have to do with higher villager friendship. But ofc can't confirm that

Ahh. That is good to know. I didn't think about the fact that she doesn't have a closet! I will have to gift her one. I had wondered if you give them dupes whether they are more likely to wear the clothes or if the game recognizes it as a dupe and will only allow one of the same item in their storage.

I accidentally gifted Bam a dress. He displayed it right away and only ever wore it on the first day that I gave it to him. He finally replaced it once I gave him a different clothing item. He has a closet but still chooses to display a clothing item on a mannequin anyway. Not sure what to think about that except that it doesn't seem to matter whether they have a closet or not!

I think all villagers have 1x1 available spaces to display items you give them, and clothes/hats are 1x1, so sometimes they display those. As far as what they choose to wear, I'm not sure. We know that they have preferred colors and styles, but it also seems like RNG to some extent. I think you can give dupes. I gave one adopted villager dupes to try to cycle out clothes from her old island, and it seemed to work, but I don't know how the game's inventory reads it.

Also, if you don't want a villager to display clothes, you can try gifting them a different 1x1 object to replace it - see furniture replacement guide

This is purely anecdotal but I’ve noticed my villagers will always display the expensive clothes I give them.

I wish they wouldn't display clothes instead of furniture.

I gave Joey some shades which looked really good on him, but he wore them once then put them on display in his house...in the spot where his apple TV used to be!

They've not shifted since, other than when he's doing a DIY.

I'm tempted to give him another apple TV to try and get his house back to how it was, but I just know what will happen if I do that...hello Mr two TVs!

:ROFLMAO:
