I usually write letters consisting of profanity, mass swearing, and repeated use of "GET OUT OF THIS VILLAGE YOU MONSTER".
Just kidding! I only write to someone if I feel like giving them a present, and I just tell them that they need the present and then compliment them. xD

Can you just write "hi" and still improve friendship? I might have been wasting time all along haha.
Hi. How are you? or with the ones that i like I love you. LOL! and sometimes if i want them to leave i call them names and make fun of them. i also post mean stuff on my bulletin board from time to time about the ones that i hate. im so evil.

Writing is so slow on here. It takes forever to write one letter, let alone 10 for all my villagers -.-

I usually talk about them that day. Like today I wrote to Juilan and Nibbles because they were fishing side-by-side. So i wrote them a letter saying I thought it was cute that they were getting along so well. I also sent them matching shirts (since they are both a blue colorish) but only Julian is wearing it. Sadface.

Don't think i've actually ever sent a letter that I don't attach a present to and when I do I usually just say about the present that i'm giving them and then at the end be like GIVE ME SOMETHING GOOD BACK PLEASE xD

I try to use key words like friend, present, happy, and other villager's names. So they end up like this

Some people say it helps if you make sure the letter reaches the 5th line. I haven't noticed that, except they comment on the length. Honestly, any string of words will work, as long as there is punctuation, capitalization, and no splitting words between lines. So you can even do
Happy friend, present. Gift Flurry present nice friend! Write friend happy letter friend reply.
But sometimes that gets boring and I'll talk smack about other villagers, threaten their well-being, make fun of their appearances, or send them my favorite quotes.

You do realise it just has a list of words to check you're not speaking gibberish, right? It doesn't have any definitions or anything though so you can just string random words together and should get a positive response as long as it's several lines long and doesn't include the same word more than ten times.
I don't really write any letters but when I do, it often just consists of me complaining about something, like how annoying that particular villager is. Then they'll just respond with something generic like "writing on rainy days is great!"

Yeah, my song lyrics always work and they don't make any sense conversationally.

I use a template for writing letters that Alexi posted in a thread a while back, about how to write understandable letters. It's quite quick and easy to do tbh and it takes up less time then writing full sentences. This is what I write:
Hey (villager name)
friend
present
happy
thank you
friend.
It works every time, and you always get a positive response. Chief's already good friends with my character and i've only sent him a letter once LOL. But maybe that's because I talk to him everyday as well.

I always write something along the lines of:
