I visited a jail once and one of the people was in their for drunk driving and he ended up killing someone he felt horrible about what he did and wanted to make it better but obviously he couldn't so not everyone in jail is a cold heartless monster but yes some are.

There have been many cases, where the convicted might have never done the crime, and after they were convicted they lived their life in a jail, knowing that it wasn't them but they were the next possible suspect. And some people don't deserve to be in jail, as I said before, they might have never done the crime, or maybe they did, and have over come what happened and has started to create a new personality and should have a second chance.
