How do people plan a residential area? Or do you use villager houses as part of your over all design spreading them out?

What makes an island feel bigger? Houses clusted together or spread out?

If clustering them together, how do you cluster them without making it feel cramped?

Or if spreading them, how do you decide what houses go where? And does it make it harder to find your villagers?

I'm not sure what do with villager houses on my own island, so I want to know what people do on their island with their Villagers!

For thr most part, the houses on my island are a square with 8 of them in rows of three (mostly) and the other two on the other side of a river flanking a ramp. I'm not sure how to decorate it since the houses are roughly 3 spaces away by width and 5 spaces apart by length. Not a lot of room for furniture, but at the same time, seems to take up a large part of my island. What do I do!

I'm hoping that I can gather some ideas from all of you!

I have 3 neighborhoods. 3 villagers + 1 player house, 4 villagers + my house, and 3 villlagers. They all have their own themes so they are not so cookie cutter.

Yeah I was thinking of something similar with making a "goth district" since I have 4 black houses on my island, but idk where to put it or how to decorate it! What themes are your neighborhoods?

I have 1 neighborhood of 8 houses. I made yards for them too. I have two villagers that have zen/imperial style exterior, so I place their house on a bamboo zen thing place :> I have a "secret" player house hiding in the "woods". I made that player's house into a gnome area. I put my house on a 2 tier cliff with a waterfall

Right now they're all sort of gathered around the plaza because I don't know where I'm gonna put them yet, plus I'm not planning on keeping Curlos, Rex, Norma, Pashmina, and Rowan.

I'm planning on spreading them out around the island and giving them all their own little areas eventually. I'm in the process of trying to make an orchard for Tangy, I've made an incomplete graveyard for Lucky (with a fortune telling stall for extra halloween vibes), Audie's getting a resort area, and Kabuki's gonna live up on the cliffs in the zen-inspired area.

I do plan on making a more residential area but I've only planned for three villagers to live around there.

I have two groups of three, two on their own, and two together. In all areas.

I like the idea of putting a fortune telling stall by Lucky's house as well a hidden house in the woods! It makes sense to theme ares around village houses, I'm just not sure its for me. About how much room do you allow for front yards?

Thank you! For front yards I'm thinking of either tying the yard into the area (Audie's gonna have a big yard with a swimming pool) or not having a yard at all (Lucky doesn't have one, he just lives at the end of the graveyard). I think generally my front yards will turn out pretty big haha 😅

I spread out the houses of my villagers not worrying about the finer details of it because I know I won't worry about it. Because of spreading out the houses throughout the island, a few villagers such as Bea, Rocco, Raymond, Carrie, and Gruff have a couple of acres to themselves. I've been using the space to give them spacious front yards.

boardwalk, bamboo, and rich. The bamboo one needs a lot of work. I have no idea what to do with it really. The boardwalk is the only one that 100% complete. My DA is in my signature if you want to see how I have the houses laid out.

I have all of my villager houses clustered in the top right of my island. 2 rows.. 6 on the lower level, 4 on the upper level.
Having two levels I think helps it not feel so cramped.
They are all fenced in with their own front yards. I like the separation, but it does kinda feel cramped. But I didn’t want to make their yards bigger as it would just take up too much space.

I think I like when islands have them spread out - but in a specific, organized way.
Like using a house to decorate an area.
I eventually want to redo my entire island I think I will spread out my houses.

One reason why I spread the houses out around my island is so that, when I make my daily rounds, I always have the option to do something more interesting other than looking for glowing spots/pulling up weeds/etc and that's the option to visit a villager.

I have house clusters of 4, 3, 2 and 1. As I like open spaces, I don't use fences for villager houses. But each house gets 2 seasonal bushes by one side and a plot of 4 flowers by the other. Some get an additional item such as a lawn mower or a clothesline. (I will attach a screenshot of Tangy's house so you can see.) Rolf gets a vegetable plot. Raymond's house is by itself by the river. He gets an extra big garden of 12 red roses. He waters them all the time. I want him to breed blue roses for me. It'll probably never happen but I'd be utterly amused if it did.

I have 2 little neighborhoods on my island! They aren't themed/moved yet because I haven't collected all my dream villagers, though. I plan on separating them by species! (I have 4 wolves, 3 deer, 2 squirrels and a duck atm)

i’ve grouped the majority of them together in a neighbourhood-type area. however, i have 4 of them in a separate areas; audie and zucker have their homes on the beach, beau is in my gnome forest and margie has her own lil garden area c’:

I plan on having most of my villagers' houses together in the bottom left area of my town. I'll have a couple which are more secluded. Probably Sprocket and whichever cranky villager I end up getting, since I imagine they would enjoy the isolation.

I made a villager suburb that was supposed to be Hollywood themed. I gave each house its own flower and 2-3 pieces of outdoor furniture.

I think it’s really cute :) I would live there. I also like living in nice suburbs in real life though.

I like that suburb idea. How about much room is there in between each house to make that work?

All my houses are spread throughout my island and they have small personal areas! Some tie into a themed area like Flora has a tropical bar in my beach/shaved ice area

Mine are spread out over my island. Every villager has a garden with flowers, trees and outdoor seating. I don’t use fences though, I prefer natural separation through paths, trees, bushes and flowers
