today I thought I should try Club Tortimer for the first time and before I go to the island I chose "worldwide" and when I got there I waited for someone to come and then this really adorable girl showed up and I said hi to her but she didn't respond and I thought she was scared of me or something and then she started to talk in Japanese, I asked her if she can speak English at all and then she started talking in gibberish English, she was trying but it seems like her vocabulary was too limited. after she left a guy came and started talking in gibberish English as well because he's German so I thought what's the point of this if we can't understand each other? it was a sad experience for me

when you were put in the same situation what did you do?

I generally avoid going to the worldwide island because of that problem. It's insanely awkward and I often end up leaving because I'm not sure how to communicate with people that don't speak English. I mean, I can try, but more often than not, the people who I come across don't understand what I'm saying no matter what.

However, if I'm determined to find a nighttime island when it's daytime for me, I usually just don't say anything to the other islanders unless I'm absolutely sure they speak English fluently enough to communicate properly. Other than that, I only go to the island with people from my own country.

Yea usually I bump into heaps of Japanese speakers and I have noooooo idea what they're on about so I end up just leaving because I don't understand or we just somehow manage to understand that we want to play mini games c:

I usually don't go to CT to interact I just prowl for rare items and if there aren't any I leave. I feel bad sometimes when people try and tall but I'm usually on a mission.

I stick to the North American islands. I personally don't like the international islands due to the language barrier. Someone did make a simple dictionary for CT that translates from Japanese to English, it's somewhere on these boards though.

I don't think it's a big deal, you can just say you don't speak the language. I don't think people who speak English expect you to know their languages and you probably don't expect them to know English. You all know that you're on an international island and that happens. Plus, if you're afraid of seeming rude, you can just go on a tour. They might follow and then you can play together without worrying as much about the language barrier or it gives you a way to get out for a bit.

For languages that you can input using the game keyboard, if you're near a computer you could use Google Translate to translate that you don't speak the language or that you're busy, or just basic phrases. It's not going to be an accurate translation but it'll probably get the point across.

I don't play online in CT but I would personally restrict to NA if I did play online. I know a very small amount of spanish but that's it...it's too hard to communicate with the little keyboard anyway lol

I don't play on Club Tortimer anyways.
I did once and the person was from Japan, but she knew some english.
I avoid going to the island with people as it's a waste of time (especially if someone tries to trap you)/ruin the experience.

I wouldnt put myself in such an awkward situation I have bad enough times talking to people in english let alone trying to understand another language id have a mental breakdown

I have a Japanese copy of the game despite not being a fluent Japanese speaker
.. Everyone on Club Tortimer assumed I was a Japanese girl who couldn't speak English unless I told them which languages I could actually speak (I did expect this to happen but it was kinda awkward)

The same thing actually just happened to me! The other girl on the island was German and so I could understand small parts but not really reply. I started using a translator because she was sweet and kept giving me flowers. Unfortunately I had to go afterwards, but she was nice!

I used google to say play a tour with me. It worked but the dummy jumped off the chair right as i sat down. The jerk trolled me. She lucky she ran away when I came back because I was gonna bust out some Japanese curse words.

I've only gone international once. There was a Japanese (I assume) girl. She said something in Japanese, I said "hi". She said "hello", then "friend code?" and started giving me hers. Ack! I just said, "Sorry. No." and she said "ok". I was only there for rare items, so I then just said, "I have to go. Bye." and left. I feel kind of bad when they want to talk, but I'm not exchanging a friend code with a stranger.

This thread reminds me of some screenshots I saw on tumblr.. On club tourti?re island, some Japanese player said "I don't speak English", then the other person said "but, you just did" and the Japanese player was like "Oh.." xD I thought that was funny.

I usually go on island hopping just to check out the island items so I'm not really talkative on CT.. Sometimes I just say hi when the other person says hello, or tell someone their outfit/hair is cute xD

I don't mind playing with those who don't speak English. Yes, it's a tad difficult, but it can be fun nonetheless. If I realize they aren't fluent in English or hardly speak it at all, I use very short sentences or single words. For example, if I want to play a tour, I'll just say, "Tour?" or "Play tour?" I even type emoticons or use actions.

I may not always understand them, but I've had lots of very polite and friendly non-American players. Some of them have even tried to teach me a few fun words in their language. And you know what? I've met some seriously good tour players... really good at team work, or even by themselves.

Sometimes I get a person who may only understand "hi" or "hello", and I'll just continue fishing or catching beetles on my own, while respecting their space and their catches. When all else fails... just use the question mark action lots of times, so they know you're clueless! Hehe~ >u<
