What decides what clothes villagers choose to wear?

There is nothing I dislike more than gifting villagers clothes that they will never wear. What decides if they will wear them or not? Color? Style?

honestly, I gifted them a lot by my own choices without knowing the charts and everyone wore everything eventually. So I say gift whatever is pleasing to your eyes!

Not at all! I've given Ursala (my sisterly) a ton of clothes and she swaps her outfits around constantly, there isn't a single thing I've gifted her that she doesn't wear- she even wears her hats regularly (it's ADORABLE). But, I also use the Nookplaza gift guide. From my experience, most of the outfits I'd gift a character because they'd look good in them are actually outfits they really like. I've gifted a few favorite items accidentally because of this

Maybe you've just given her outfits she really dislikes or have bad luck?

yup! this is super helpful. A while back, I didn't know that villagers will mainly only wear what matches their color and style preferences 0:

I could be wrong, but I think friendship can also affect this?

on the same topic do they only wear headwear once? I gifted both audie and chief hats to go with the outfits. they wore them then, but after that they have just shown up as displays in their house

I’m wondering the same thing. I just gave Rudy a Viking Helmet to go with the Viking Outfit but now it’s on display. Ugh. Might have to kick him out again and reinvite him to get rid of the helmet on display if he doesn’t remove it and wear it.

When I had Tex, Tex wore the top hat I gave him multiple times and never put it on display.

I've experienced the opposite At the beginning I just gifted anything I had on hand and gave Flo (a sisterly) a red dance-team jacket. It was ugly but she would not take it off and wore it every single day as if it was her original clothes lol. Everyone else I gave clothes has never worn it as long as Flo wore and loved that damn red dance-team jacket.

That's good to know. Somehow Fuschia just refuses to wear most of the stuff I give her. Unlike my Tangy.

If you look her up in nookipedia etc, fuchsia only likes pink clothes and the ‘cool’ style. Nookipedia lists all the clothing with what style it falls into. I have found gifting her anything pink will have a good chance of her wearing it somewhat. I gave her a black and pink ‘rumba dress’ and she wears it a lot. But a lot of the stuff she will wear the most is...a bit matchy matchy with her.

I actually really like her original dress and it is nice something she wears that it is not so much pink on pink.

I think giving her non ‘cool’ clothes in a color other than pink (with no pink on it, because even a little pink seems to count) will have the lowest probability of her wearing it.
