i've seen quite a number of posts regarding corruption of the game. i'm curious, what causes the game to corrupt?

Turning the power off/removing your cartridge while your game is saving. And removing the SD card while your DS is still turned on. These are the most common, there are probably other ways too.

Aside from what Vintage said above, sometimes files will just very rarely go bad for no apparent reason. Though turning off while saving is probably the biggest cause.

Not talking Animal Crossing here, but my Pokemon Ruby game went corrupt randomly after not playing it for a while. I don't know if that has anything to do with corruption. The most random corruptions is what makes me worry for my game ;-;

Most often though, it's while the game is trying to save but can't finish the save. I'm not an expert, but I think this is how it works:
Since it was in the middle of overwriting the last save, the whole last save isn't there because it was in the process of being overwritten. The new save couldn't finish though, so your game ends up corrupted.

It's almost always either removing the game cartridge while the game is running/saving or turning the 3DS off when the game is saving. Almost always.

most corruption occurrences are related to the dysfunction/removal of the SD card or from saving incidents.

That actually makes a lot of sense! I'd be surprised if you weren't right about this!

The most common ways are taking out the SD card while the 3DS is on and turning the power off/taking the game out while it's saving.

Those aren't the only ways, though. I remember the data for a DS game I had corrupting, for no apparent reason. I never turned the power off/took the game out while it was saving or anything like that.

Those times when a game randomly corrupts are the worst. I've heard of people's AC:NL data randomly getting corrupted after having it for 2+ years, and I worry about the same happening to me because I've also had the game for 2+ years. But the chances pf that happening are extremely low, especially if you take good care of your SD card/3DS/game cartridge (if you got a physical copy).

Honestly, the most common cause I've seen for a game corrupting in people hacking them with either powersave or other means. While the other known ways were things like turning off while saving, ejecting while save are common, for the most it's been hacking that I've seen cause a file to corrupt a lot more often. It is a bit overlooked because it's obvious that hacking can corrupt a game, but that doesn't mean it's any less common.

Also battery life! I can not stress enough!! Don't try to play chicken with flashing red battery lights thinking you can always get a save off just before the system dies! My friend used to do this and it corrupted his entire SD Card, he lost 5 games because of this. Like two Pokemon, both AC:NL and one other I forget. He lost a ton of stuff because of playing chicken with saving and the DS Battery!

Other than that, yea watch out for whats happening with your DS and games. Be careful not to accidentally eject SD cards, games or anything while playing / saving. Most legitimate, non hacked, causes for corruption are something error'd during the save process like: removing the SD Card, game or the DS just dying.

I've seen 4 or 5 people have their ACNL games corrupted by plot-resetting, which is why I refuse to do it. Shutting the game off without saving on a new file a million times apparently isn't good for your game.

I kinda worry about my game randomly corrupting since I bought a used copy. I deleted the previous owner's town without even looking at it so who knows, it could've been hacked or glitched or something beforehand.
