Weird habits.

i have trichotillomania but only with my eyebrows. so basically when i'm stressed i pluck out the hairs on my eyebrows with my fingertips, and since i had a lot of uni work due i now have none lol, it's ok though i draw them in like a pro
I have it too but with the hair on my head. Not so much anymore, but when I was younger it was really bad. I had bald spots everywhere. My mom has no eyelashes to this day because of it.

My hands have to be clean when I eat. If I eat with my hands, I wipe them on a napkin after I touch food every time. I just don’t like the feeling of having grease or sauce on my hands.

When I was a teen I was a nail biter but one day I simply told myself that I wanted nice nails and stopped cold turkey. But even though I don’t bite my nails anymore I still pick at my thumb nails constantly so they never truly grow long. They look fine but they’re never long enough to bypass the skin if that makes any sense.

I also change toilet paper rolls to be over and not under but that’s just a pet peeve of mine.

I have a lot of strange habits related to my OCD and oddly many of them involve food.

I can't stand having different foods touching on my plate.

I alternate chewing on both sides of my mouth very strictly; the first bite on the right, the second on the left and so on. I must finish with an even amount of bites on each side. I will split the final bite if necessary.

I line up my M&Ms by color and eat them one color at a time from least favorite to most favorite.

Those are some of the main ones but I have many more.

I had a blanket I called 'poogie' when I was younger that I took everywhere. I always found rubbing the top of my nose with it to be soothing.

I STILL do this regularly (as in multiple times per day) with my blankets, sheets, and sweater cords. It's an act of comfort for me. :)

when i’m watching tv or listening to music while i drive, the volume number has to end in either 0 or 5 or else it bugs me lol idk why

I also have a bad habit of putting things in my mouth. Whenever I'm holding a pen or a pencil or a stylus it always ends up in my mouth and I like to drink everything through a straw and sometimes I wind up chewing on things like bottle caps or cherry stems. I need to stop
I tend to put things in my mouth, too. Or rather, between my lips? It just seems like an easy way to free my hands. Why put something down when I can just use my lips to hold it?
i have a habit of saying ow when something doesn't actually hurt
Yeah. It just feels less awkward to say something when I run into something and ow it the first thing that comes to mind.
I hate salad dressing. No matter what it is, I always have to have a dry salad. It's just... icky, and slimy.
Right? It just doesn't taste all too good on a salad, which is funny because I like ranch with fries and pizza, but not salad.
Cracking my knuckles. Or attempting to if they don't have to pop. A lot of the time in social situations I don't know what to do with my hands so I automatically go for cracking them.
It's almost like my body is addicted to having them cracked because I actually feel like a lingering pressure where I crack that craves a good release.
I love touching cold, flat surfaces, like walls and the undersides of tables. It's my favorite autistic stim, along with banging my head on the pillow before I go to sleep. I've been doing these things since I was a little girl. Somehow no one in my family is weirded out by these habits, lol.
My favourite cold surface are windows. I love how the heat of my fingers creates a fog spread on it. I like textured surface, too. Running my fingers over the bumps and ridges feels so interesting. Also, as I have grown out my nails, I love tapping them against various surfaces.

When I sit, I cross my ankles. It's super comfortable. I actually do the same when lounging on the couch, too.

I can get super excited when I read, sometimes. When that happens I have a tendancy to stop, get up to pace, and gush over what's going on. With that, I gush about the possibilities and can go off into my own imagination. Along those lines, I have conversations/debates with myself, often. When I do, I like to pace around the house just like when I am excited. Both of these can last a good amount of time.

  • I bite my nails a lot (don't worry I wash my hands frequently). It's a subconscious thing too because I don't wanna do it and then I'll be focused on something and suddenly like half of my nails are gone.
  • I have to sleep with something to squeeze. Lately it's been a big squishy teddy my brother got me for an xmas.
  • I also have to have the blanket under my feet or I can't get comfortable.
  • I also have to sleep with a light on. Not sure if that's just habit or my fear of the dark.
  • I have to eat food one at a time?? Like if I have a burger, fries, and nuggets I have to eat one after the other. I've been trying to get over this habit since it makes me eat really slow.
  • Please don't judge me (I think it's a stim thing), but if I get mad enough I hit myself in the head. Fortunately I don't get mad a lot, but it's still a bad habit I need to stop.
  • I also call myself stupid way too much. Especially over tiny things. Idk I just really don't like making mistakes and it makes me feel dumb if I do even if it's just a tiny thing. I'm working on this one.

Whenever I drive or ride in a car, I always do this thing with my feet or my teeth where I count how many times I go past certain things like telephone polls or I do it every five seconds. For example, I flex a muscle or I click my teeth together every time I see a telephone pole or tree. It’s super hard to explain, and I’m not sure that I even said it right, but it’s something weird that I do and I can’t help it.

i bit my nails but that's probably not a weird habit.
but I also tend to scrape out dirt from under them using whatever i can find... folded paper corners, toothpicks, whatever happens to be around....

also when my imagination gets overactive (when im brainstorming things to draw, write, etc.) i often have to vent it by jumping and running around the room.
fortunately, don't think i've done this in public yet.

i carry my my baby blanket with me whenever i stay somewhere overnight. i have this bad habit where i twist my fingers on it (which is quite bad for my RA) and i smell it constantly because i find it soothing..?

i also have some weird behaviors when i get anxious that are:
pressing down on my stomach really hard ?
clearing my throat over and over again
fanning myself
and petting my hair so hard it makes my hair fall out ( i had some bald spots in 8th grade lmfaooo )

thankfully ive developed a way to hide these behaviors when im around people as to not freak them out, but before i just did these without a care of who was observing 😬

I also always need my shoe laces to be double knotted to they will NEVER come undone. I have not tied my shoes in over 3 years. I just slip them on and off. Yes, I have had the same shoes for 3 years. Deal with it.
I do this with all my laced shoes hahaha. Tie them once then never again - just slip them on. It ruins the backs but I don't really care

I touch my eyes/around my eyelids like a LOT, which I've never noticed other people do, but maybe it's just something I don't see. It started a few years ago when I began putting in contacts everyday, and now I'm just constantly using my finger to mess with my eyelashes or move my contact lens just because I can.

I was just thinking about how different people are. What are some strange habits you have picked up throughout your lifetime?

One for me is that I eat huge amounts of sauce with my meals. Doesn't really matter what I eat. If It can use sauce, I usually have a ton of it.

Whenever I get frustrated I put either both hands or just my left hand on my jaw and move my hand(s) upward until it passes my forehead. I’m not sure why I do this but I can’t really control it so all my family members can tell when I’m angry

Oh and I do this weird little hum throughout the day. It sounds like “hm hm hmmm” I don’t know why I do it, but every time I do it when a family member is around they do it as well to tease me

it's a force of habit, but I always make the same expression of faces that I draw. Whether it be smiling, angry, pouting, or a mischievous face. I've been caught several times, I can't help it.
I’m not sure if you mean you make the expression or if you draw the same expression, but apparently whenever I’m making something artsy or focusing really hard on something I stick my tongue out just a little bit

I do that too! I tend to lick my lips when I'm drawing intensely and it always leaves me with hella chapped lips 😆

i always chew on the straws of my drinks and i tend to do a lot of unintentional spoonerisms sometimes.

Hoooo boy, I've probably got a lot of these!

The first that come to mind is how I have quite a bunch of weird, pretty specific eating habits? I think they mostly stem from the fact that I'll often try to finish with the part I like the most, so it leads into stuff like cutting out the middle of breaded fish so I can eat it first xD

There's also this specific type of small circular chocolate cake we get that I love, and it's got "eat warm" written on the cap… but when I was younger, after having eaten it warm only once or twice, I tried it cold straight from the fridge to go faster and just, kept doing it? So in the end I liked it better cold than warm xD (and I still do)

Another one, still kinda food-related: one time, when I was younger, my mom showed me on to put my napkin on my knees before eating (we have nice ones with fruits embroidered in a corner). She put it on my knees with the corner with the fruit being up-right, and she told me something like "This is how you place it". Apparently, my brain interpreted that as "the fruit must always be in the up-right corner"! So even now, I keep that fruit there when placing my napkin on my knees, and when I use another type of napkin (without fruits) I put the label there instead xD At least it helps me keep always the same side of the napkin up.

…oh and i keep eating the "dead" skin of my lips i should really stop doing that oops

i pretend to look at other people when theyre talking because i cant stand eye contact but ppl get mad if i dont look at them so i usually try to make it look like im looking at them but actually i'm looking at somethng behind them or something.
i feel you! sometimes i've tried looking at their nose instead of their eyes, i think it helps since it's so close to the eyes that people probably don't notice, but it's technically not the eyes
