Villagers wearing custom clothing

Does anyone know if there is any logic to the way this works? We know villagers each have two preferred clothing colors - does this affect what they might choose to wear in terms of custom clothing, or is it completely random?

I'd like to put some custom designs up at the Able Sisters, but I've heard stories of 4 or 5 villagers all wearing the same design, so I was curious if there was any way to avoid that.

I don’t know if colors matter too much. Melba (who’s fave color is green/white)has worn my tardis dress I’ve made and so has Bangle. The black and dark gray jack skellington sweatshirt has been worn by Drago, flurry, Melba, zell,
In short they have all worn clothes that don’t follow their favorite colors

judy's favorite colors are pink and white. but she has been wearing a yellow and black custom design.

while on the topic of custom designs, i think it's weird that villagers can pick up designs from visitors. the design judy is using is something that she got from one of my friends the last time he was in my town. he didn't give it to her either, she just took it on her own. not even sure if he interacted with her.

You can remove the custom design by talking to Isabelle. Is the design hanging in your ables? I don't think villagers care what color the custom design is.

I wish the colors did matter, because I really want Carmen to wear one specific dress but she never does. It's the exact colors she likes!

it's not hanging from ables.

also, apparently complaining to isabelle is only a temporary solution. once you complain they stop wearing it, but then they'll start wearing it again sometimes just minutes after. luckily i don't hate this design. it's from an anime i hadn't even heard of and it doesn't match her style in the slightest, but i'm just pretending that she is a secret cosplayer.
