Villagers talking about each other fondly?

This is a bit difficult to explain, but since I haven't seen footage or people talking about this specifically, I wanted to ask if anyone knew what this was about. It only happened once just a few weeks after launch--is there some kind of friendship mechanic between villagers? I recall it being between Reneigh and Ed before I moved Ed out (both horses), and I recall them making quite a few comments about each other specifically when I talked to them. (I wondered if this was possibly locked between compatible personalities that are also the same species since I haven't seen this behavior again between a smug and uchi, or any other villagers for that matter.)

Does anyone know if this is an intended feature / has anyone else experienced this between their villagers?

Commenting about each other is one thing, that's definitely common enough... I don't mean how they comment on each other when visiting other homes or being close to another's house... It's vaguely bothering me how I can't find this sort of occurrence / google this. I figured-- maybe it's like a cute 'developing a crush' mechanic that's rare? If so, same species lock would sort of make sense (but is also a bummer if that's the only time you can see the dialogue.) It didn't seem randomized or something that they'd do right after talking to the other, but like the characters were really fixating on specifically talking about this one other villager.

I don't think I've experienced that type of interaction. I don't recall seeing any datemined information about villager friendships, so maybe it is just something from the dialogue tree? No idea what might trigger it, though.

That would be pretty cool unless u were in a pretend relationship with one of the villagers and then they cheated on you

I'm guessing it might be an extreme coincidence... Reneigh was talking about Ed quite a bit and Ed was talking about Reneigh quite a bit (without it appearing to be random-generated dialogue from being near each other's houses, etc), so I figured this had to be something very specific. Dataminers, though... I guess I might try to ask someone who's been poking around in the dialogue specifically.
