I have about 230 hours in New Horizons and yet the only requests I have gotten was giving two sick villagers medicine. Is there something I need to do to get villagers to make requests, like have a certain level of friendship?

I get asked for fish and bugs.

Do they not invite us over anymore?

I've never been asked to go to their house.

Playing since launch, I've been asked for one thing, once, and found a few lost items (<5). Two treasures hunts. It definitely detracts from bonding with the villagers, and motivating me to play. I think they just insanely decreased the likelihood of it occuring. The dialogue option to just fork over an item is pretty lame, and I think comes out of all the players who wanted to really customize villager homes/wardrobes. (I feel like people put a lot of work into this in NL?)
I've heard mixed opinions about this from other people.

Yeah I get asked just to fish for them or find bugs. I really hope they update it so we can visit each others’ homes. I miss setting a date to meet at a villager’s house and then forgetting about it.

You have to talk to them a lot! And I mean 4+ times in a row. You also have to be pretty good friends with them, the ones that request things on my island have been there for a looooong time.
Rarely a villager will request something on the first dialogue or on their own, but I find that they request things the more you talk to them!
There are also other tasks such as delivering things and treasure hunts.

Ah, thank you! This gives me much hope. I still have Cherry from starting my island and even she doesn't ask :[
Guess I need to really pester her.

I think you have to have a really high friendship level with them in order to get requests, and you have to talk to them often when you do. I’ve had some villagers ask me to do stuff for them when I talk to them frequently.

Try talking to them 4 times. Also, sometimes when I'm holding a net/fishing pole, they ask me to catch stuff. Must be coincidence... I dunno.

I think they def ask less than they did in acnl, but you need to talk to them a lot, 4+ times in a row as other people have mentioned. Even then its not that many requests, I usually get max one a day and I'm at max level friendship with everyone :(

I don't want to have their houses filled with fish and bugs.
It's kinda gross.

Animals, keeping animals.

Bring back good old fruit requests.

And bring back all the missing fruit! :)

They have asked me for bugs and fish and have asked me to buy stuff from them or buy my stuff. They’ve also asked me to deliver stuff for them also.

But no, I haven’t had them ask to come see my house or barge in my house (I liked that though)

It also seems you can’t get stuff for free if you decline buying their items. In NL if a villager asks you to buy their stuff and you decline, they would give you their item if you have a high enough friendship. They don’t seem to do that even though I know I have a high friendship with them because I have their photo. Sometimes, they’ll ping and give you free stuff but not the decline to buy and they give it to you.

Yes!!! They are super greedy in this game!
And the prices they ask for a generic shirt, over 2k! O_o

I KNOW, RIGHT? That’s why I found it weird. In NL they would give you the items for free when you declined. Here they’re like: Guess I’ll ask someone else if they wanna buy this thing. But I also found the items they’re selling to be on the high side too... Guess that’s island life for you.

I also never seem to get anything free when I snoop in their houses either.

I only get asked for fish and bugs. Just once did anyone ask for an item. Bam wanted to buy my cypress tub for around 4000. Of course I said yes. I am such a push over.

I just had pashmina give me a board game that I declined paying for, so it does happen. This was the first time though, so it's probably rare. She said something like "I was asking more to get rid of it than for the bells".

But like everyone else said, talk to them 4-5 times in a row. They rarely ask for things in the first conversation or two. Going through all my villagers, I can usually get 2 requests for each rotation.

Thanks for all the ideas! I managed to get 2 more villager requests by holding a tool and talking 4+ times, but I'm not sure if its a coincidence. I really hope in the future they make villagers request more.

Villagers don't run up to you for requests, as far as I'm aware. They offer gifts or sell you stuff like this, but they dont ask for favors this way I don't believe. When I am asked to get them a bug/fish, its only when I engage conversation with them. They don't ping me, which is kinda unfortunate because I really miss that.

Sometimes I get asked to do a treasure hunt. Reminds me of hide and seek in NL.

This is kind of an insane amount of work to get requests though. I know it dinged your friendship if you rejected/failed the request in NL, maybe the devs are overcompensating for that? But all you'd have to do is not have it affect their friendship...

Yea it kind of sucks but I think the problem ironically lies in the increase to villagers reacting to stuff. It seems you have to get that stuff out of the way before they say what is on their mind. For example if someone visited recently they will comment on that person, then if they are next to an object they may comment on that, then if you were hitting rocks or something of the sort they will comment on that. Eventually you will get to what they are actually thinking, although it does still seem like it is kind of rare
