I was wondering out of curiosity, why is it only sometimes when giving gifts to the villagers do they give gifts back? I've noticed it a few times now.
I'm pretty sure what determines if a villager gives you a gift in return for your gift is how much your gift is worth when you sell it at the shop (as opposed to what it cost you to buy it). I forget the exact bell threshold, but I get a gift back 100% of the time if I give them two wrapped non-native fruits, so a gift worth 1,000 bells works for sure.
