Has a villager ever moved into a really cramped, unfortunate place in your town? I keep trying to prevent this by stick PWP's where I can, but they really don't seem to require that much space.
How many block-by-blocks do they need to set a house? I'm worried one will plop down right in my backyard if I'm not careful!

They do seem to need the house space, but they must account for the entry way space as well?
Anyone know?

I'd like to know this too, considering my Orchard is surrounded by my river and the cliff and someone somehow managed to move right in the middle of it anyways... ><;;

Aha, yep! I have a similar set-up. I stuck a bench, drinking fountain, and a street light in there and I don't THINK anyone can move in there. I will probably be surprised, though. >_>;

>.<;
I thought i'd play safe by having my orchard on the edge of the map, cornered by my river, with a giant boulder in the middle.

Nuuupe. :I
Tipper managed to find a spot riiight infront of my rock. >.<
incredibly frustrating.

I'll do more research about how many squares do a house really require...

Villager houses are 3x3. One space around is 5x5. So a villager can move into any 25 spaces available.

I am also doing research on if house placement is predetermined but unseen. I have heard of new villagers moving into the exact place a previous villager had lived.

We've had one new resident move into the exact spot another moved out of. So that definitely happens.

I think that they need 2 spaces to the side if there is a PW or another building there; but they only need 1 space if it's a cliff wall or the river. Not totally sure about that but that's how they came in here.

I think it's YOU need 2 spaces around a villager to put a public work, but they need 1 space to put their house. - I really feel like this should have been the other way round and Ninty got it wrong somewhere cause it makes no sense.

Hmm. Interesting info, guys!
And yes, I've had a villager move into an exact spot where someone else had lived, too.

I went to someones town via dream suite, and a villager had moved in right in front of the town hall!

I believe this is true too. I had Angus move in from another town so I was happy to reset knowing it would always be him. At one point I thought I'd somehow done the trick wrong because 5 times in a row his house was in exactly the same place. Out of the other four places I was 'offered' another spot was suggested 3 times and yet another 2.
