Villager plots

I'm at the point where my first camper's house has been built and he'll be moving in at some point. Tom Nook allows me to build additional plots.

Will random villagers move into those plots? Or will they stay open until I invite someone from an island or the campsite? Was kinda irritated that randoms moved in for 2 out of my first 3 plots... (The ones before the campsite)

Yeah, random villagers will move in at some point if left on their own.

Unfortunately it's quite a frustrating process—to me at least. Apparently you have one day (the day you place the plot until the next morning) to recruit a villager through the Islands or campsite. After that, a random villager moves in. To make it worse, you can only invite Islanders once you've placed a plot, meaning that you never have more than 24h to find the one(s) you want >.>

This is actually good to confirm as I assumed that they'd stay open until you invited another villager. I'm glad I found this out before placing my plots lol.

Sadly yes random villagers can move in. A villager from someone's void moved on my last slot. Boy I was disappointed that was still in this game.
