How do they exactly work? Do I need to cover every tile, or can I 'skip' some tiles and still prevent plots from going in that area?

Example: I leave an empty 3x3 plot, surrounded by patterns with a 1 tile gap every time on my whole town. Will the plot ONLY go to that 3x3 plot or can it 'sneak' in the empty 1x1 tiles?

Sorry if this is hard to understand. Not really sure how I can word this better. Never been good at explaining things.

you can skip tiles! that's what i did for my town. i made sure to never leave a 3x3 space available, except for where i wanted villagers to place their plots. that way i wouldn't have to worry about plot resetting, as the villagers would only move into the available 3x3 space. they never move onto patterns, so you don't need for worry about them 'sneaking' onto empty 1x1 or 2x2 tiles :)

I figured that was the case.. but just wanted to make sure. Haven't really played since early 2016.

Yes as Kawaii902 says you can skip tiles.
The problem I've found tho is its easy to see flowers, trees & bushes as fixed - they are not, villager plots take them out, its easy to think you have covered enough with tiles but forget a tree or something.

If you have 3 or less characters I'd recommend tiling and plot resetting (with a new save file) - I tile so I exclude areas & also plot reset in case the villager goes in an area I forgot about. I've found it a fairly fast process.

In some towns I have 4 characters so have to rely on tiling - I tend to go overboard a bit and almost blanket cover, not quite, but its easy to see trees as unmovable.

Yeah. I'm skipping every two tile with a pattern, putting down extras where a tree is blocking where a pattern should go, just to be careful.

Doing this (x is Pattern, o is empty tile):

xooxooxoox
oooooooooo
oooooooooo
xooxooxoox

And so on.

Don't you still need to leave a space in front of their doors (like the middle bottom in a 3x3)? I always assumed that was the case and did it in my town, but maybe it's not a thing.

Whatever you do, you should still plot reset. It's surprising how many small spots you'll miss that'll fit a villager's house.

Haha, yeah. Decided I'd double check on a new file and behold, I did indeed miss a few spots so now I'm stuck plot resetting my villager and she keeps swapping between two spots, refusing to go where I actually want her to go. XD

Easily fixed.

Load the town BEFORE 6.00 AM, on the day you are plot resetting, with your mayor, and lay a few more tiles down in the problem area.

Then save BEFORE 6.00 AM once again, and start plot resetting with a new save file.

^_^

Yeah, I mucked up though and accidentally just sent it forward 24 hours instead of before 6AM, so I screwed myself over a bit. Only took 10 minutes for Skye to get in her plot, though. She only had three spots she could plot, one being where I wanted her.
