I'm not really sure what to do in this case. I've been holding a villager for someone for a few months now. I haven't been online much in that time, but I've been checking in periodically with them. Now that villager has pinged me to move tomorrow, but the person hasn't been online in a month and I have no other way to contact them. I don't want to be that guy, but what is appropriate to do in this situation?

I think it would be appropriate to get in touch with the person through the forum. They might get an alert for that and login. If they have multiple contact methods listed on their profile, you could even try a couple of them.

Personally, I'd ask the villager to stay for now but let the person know what happened and ask them if there's a more foolproof way of getting in touch with them when the villager pings again. You can explain that you need the room in your town and that the next time the villager pings, you'll have to say yes.

If you don't want to do that, you can just say yes now and try your best to get in touch with this person. Sometimes people aren't online but will log back in at a short notice, so maybe that's no indication that they've neglected you.

Personally, I would let the villager go (or give it to someone else). If the user hasn't been online in a month it sounds like they've lost interest. That's a long time :/
And if they come back, you could apologize for what happened and offer to help them find the villager again? From a cycler or a giveaway. Or if it's an expensive one you could offer to help pay for a new one.

That's what I would do at least. What an annoying situation >.<
