Villager clothes and changing seasons?

Right now I've been giving my villager "summer" clothes (tank tops, etc) but I am wondering what will happen in the winter when I start giving them sweaters, coats, and hats? Do they know how to wear warm clothes in the winter only? Or do they have a clothing/wardrobe limit of say, only 16 items? I don't want to walk outside in the dead of winter and see Flora prancing around in her hula top, nor do I want to load up the game next summer and see Tom in his down coat and knit hat!!!

Fang and Marina and Kiki all still wear their original sweaters often even though it's Summer and even though I've given them short sleeved options. I'm not sure they realize the difference unfortunately.

Whatever you give your villagers I believe, stays with them throughout all the seasons. However when it snows out or rains out, they will put on some kind of rain gear or have an umbrella. Except for frogs. Frogs like rain.

they only wear coats/jackets when it is snowing in the winter! they rotate their regular wardrobe on any other day.
