I'd be willing to try this with my cycling town, if someone's open to taking a random villager and TTing them into boxes.

I'm pretty skeptical of this. The 16-villager cycle is required so the villager falls out of your game's data storage. New character or not, the villager would still be in the game's memory. If anyone is going to try this, make sure it's with a villager you don't mind losing if your friend puts her into boxes and your character can't pick her up.

Exactly that!
The new save file won't remember the dreamie as he/she joined after the dreamie left.
