he story, as I first heard it, was that when World War II ended and everyone was celebrating in Times Square, a sailor grabbed a nurse, spun her around and kissed her. A photographer captured it.
I was in high school when I first heard that and I was mesmerized. These are the sort of things that get me.
The photographer was Alfred Eisenstaedt.
The sailor's identity was never firmly established.
The nurse was Edith Shain. She passed away on Sunday in Los Angeles at the age of 91.
Today, I am grateful ~
1/ That I'm a hopeless romantic and I wouldn't want to be any other way.
2/ That Edith Shain never forgot the war and visited veterans homes up until her death. As they said in the 1940's and as we say in my circle of friends, what a doll!
3/ That every August 14th in Times Square, there's a Kiss In to honor the US Armed Forces and to commemorate The Kiss. How great is that?! Never participated when I lived in NYC but H and I may have to make a pilgrimage in honor of Alfred, Edith and the unidentified sailor. Ma, get my nurse's costume out of the attic.
