Upgraded Nook's Cranny

Is there certain tasks required to finish in order for the Nook shop to upgrade or is it random? Sorry I'm not sure if this has already been covered. Thanks in advance!

I believe you need to spent 70,000 bells AND have the regular Nook's Cranny shop for 28-30 days (I forget the exact number).

So as long as you've spent 70k in there so far, it's just a waiting game until the 28-30 days passes!
