Unique Smoke Patterns

Wow, I never noticed that. I feel like I've always seen circle smoke. I'll pay more attention and report back when my 3DS is done charging.
 
I've always noticed but never paid enough attention to see if the same character's changes... This will be interesting. The fish and bug thing make sense but then the stars and flowers wouldn't have a meaning other than being decorative?
 
I noticed this too, but I thought it was based on personality type- evidently not! Lily: Flowers. Hippeux: Star. Tank: Fish. Everyone else is outside. On a side note, I find it interesting that four of the symbols correspond with an item that is affected by a tool. Fishing rod for the fish; Net for the butterfly; Watering can for the flower; Shovel for the star (the cracks in the ground). Those four tools also happen to be the four tools villagers can be seen carrying! COINCIDENCE? probably.
EDIT: Additionally, when villagers have no tool, they shake trees. Circular trees for the circular smoke.. There actually might be something to this theory! Maybe it reflects their favourite activity.

In my town, Rudy had a fish-shaped smoke coming out of his chimney, but he also has a fish-shaped cutout in his door, so I thought that was why the smoke was shaped that way. I'll have to look and see what the others are later, right now only one is home and his smoke is oval but his door doesn't have a cut-out.
 
In my town Sprinkle has a butterfly and she actually wants me to catch a bug for her at the moment. I'd check my other villagers too but they're not inside.

So maybe it has to do with their house exterior? Not particularly their door... hmm. Diana has fish smoke and her door has a fish on it too, like Rudy. I am such a liar x.x

Edit: Carmen has stars. She says she's an idol.

Thanks everyone. If we go with the theory of it is what they want / are thinking of, I think
Fish = Fish ^^
Butterfly = Bugs
Stars = Digging / fossils (they do carry spades after all)
Flowers = Gardening (They also carry watering cans)
Circles = Nothing in particular?
 
I've just checked my game and Penelope's house currently has flowers coming out of her chimney. I haven't paid too much attention to the others.

I've also seen hearts. Re-tail has a heart, at least in my town. Not sure if there are villagers with heart smoke rings.

Also, Sheldon's chimney makes flowers.
 
Portia and Punchy were the only ones at home this morning. They both had circle shaped smoke coming out of their chimneys. Portia wanted a Golden Stag and Punchy a Perfect Fruit. -.-
 
I don't think the theory of it being what they're thinking is correct. For example, Punchy tends to ask me for the most bug/fish requests but he has circular smoke. Also I'm sure that I've visited another Lucha who hasn't had star shaped smoke like my one does.
