I think a little bit of both. I can't stand snooty characters and don't want them in my town if I can help it. But I find myself not wanting characters like Tammi, Pietro and Beardo simply because of how scary looking they are.

"Ugly" villagers?

When picking out the villagers I like, I obviously go for whoever I think looks cute/appealing to me. It could be someone popular like Beau or less talked about villagers like Pierce. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. And there's obviously more at play than just the looks but honestly, some villagers just click with you and others just don't.
Did I give Katt a fair chance when she moved in? No, not really. But I kept Barold around for a pretty long time because I grew to like him a lot. Same goes for the 'good-looking' villagers. I didn't care much for Mint or Cookie and I allowed them to leave as soon as they pinged me even though I found them both to be really cute.
The gorillas though are just awful. /shudder Just plain terrible designs. All of them. Even the hippos have Bertha and the Kangaroos have Marcie but the gorillas are just really, really ugly to me. :/
And how is Pashmina ugly omg. ;-; I know, I know-- they're 'opinions' and all that but gosh, c'mon-- she's so pretty.

tbh, its like real life. you judge people by looks at first impression too. and cause this is a game, you personally want the "cutest" animals for your town, hence the whole dreamie trend. and, i have multiples of the same personality in my town and they virtually say the same things so... looks it is ;o
O man. Like Jambette gets dogged on so much but Violet tho is just as bad imo. But haha, yeah. Hans would be a pretty cool addition to a ice-themed town.
And I figured there are people out there who like them. They're just not for me.

well,? if you want to be cold about it, two "normal" villagers have the same "nice" personality. So? yes, they are all nice, even if they are ugly or pretty.
I base them on looks. Sorry, but they are pixels. And when you have 8 personallity types those pixels have, and they all say the same things, I will pick the ones I prefer.
(Now this doesnt affect relationships from past games where the stuff they said was intresting, but I think anyone can grow to love a villager purely for being themselfs in new leaf, or any AC game for that matter)

Theres sooo many ugly villagers i like.. which ive named before..
My most loved villagers such as Vesta and Willow arent too popular
BUT one villagers i love genuinely only gets hate
I adore her..
she was in my original town Koholint and shes just so cute imo, and if i ever reset one of my towns, she will be a dreamie..

At first, I hated Zucker because I thought he looked really creepy (four legs move at a time, has a snout thing). But he really grew on me. I think he's one of my favorites now. I personally don't really like Spork (hope he moves soon LOL) and Hugh (he's the same thing as Spork, only blue and with kid things in his house LOL).
When it comes to Animal Crossing, I don't buy into all the "IT'S ON THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS <3 <3 <3" stuff. I judge every villager based on their looks because in Animal Crossing, every personality falls under one of the 8 personalities, so you really already know what to expect. Take my favorite lazy, Erik, and my least favorite, Barold for example. I love Erik because I think he's the cutest lazy, I don't like Barold because I think he's the ugliest lazy. But having one or the other makes NO difference in personality whatsoever. So I just judge away since it's just a game.

Both. I dislike jocks strongly so anyone of that personality is a no. But i do judge on looks i love cute things and well if i find a villager cute then i want that villager. Eye of the beholder maybe my villagers aren't cute to some but to me they're adorable and i want to hug their fluffy little pixels. And if i get an ugly villager like hippeux,hopper,prince,jambette...-shudder- i will literally focus ONLY on getting rid of them because i can't stand seeing a villager i dislike live in my town. Sorry if i seem picky but hey that's just me

Well I think Hopper is the BEST villager!!! If I didn't have him.....I would be so sad, and I would reset no stop, for MONTHS if I had to just to get him from the campsite. And I would even buy him, even thought I hate the whole buy/sell/trade villager concept, and would happily pay 500,000,000,000 bells for him!!!

Like.. I don't like the jocks, but Genji is a freaking awesome jock!
And I love the normals, but Merengue makes me sick.. (so does the sweets set.. seeing sweets and stuff makes me sick, but I have no problem eating them XD)

Honestly I don't get the whole dreamie thing, one or two as a preference, yeah, sure, but people who have to control the inherent randomness of the game and must have THIS particular set of ten and NOBODY ELSE EVER, it confuses me a bit. Not to say it's wrong, it's just weird.
Personally I'm completely indifferent to looks, long as I've got one of every personality so I can get all the PWP requests (although I might even have them all by now? Not sure). Marshal and Quillson say the exact same things--I don't care if the latter's an unpopular duck, he's the same for my purposes! If Marshal asks to leave first, I shall cheerfully kick him out and keep Quillson.
