Well, there are only a few different personalities in the game. The only thing that differentiates one cranky (or peppy, or smug etc etc) from another is their design, so it makes sense to prefer the one who's appearance you enjoy.

I disagree that people always judge on looks, though, as other's have pointed out, it's a bit hard not to when it's the only thing that distinguishes villagers within the personality types.
People tend to like the villagers that they feel a special connection with which could be because their design appeals to them personally, they become close friends with them in the game or they find them cute and loveable (which of course appearance is going to affect).
Thankfully we are all different and will find different villagers appealing visually. Everyone prefers different colours and species and some will prefer the very cute villagers, while others will think that they are too girly.
Having said that, there are definitely some villagers that are almost universally appealing and unappealing, though of course there are still exceptions to that.

I used to when I first started NL but I realized it really was making me unhappy. I didn't play like this in WW why start now? Whoever moves into town now ugly or not is welcomed into Zombie. Some have ended up being a favorite.
Take Katt, my friend got her for my hobby town, Valley. I chose Katt for all the wrong reasons. She sounded prefect for a spooky themed town. When I was working on Valley more actively I grew to like Katt. She not the prettiest cat out there but shes cool to me. I also think she fits her personality type.
She won me over with this standard "I haven't seen you in a while" conversation she had with a side character.

Looks. There are only 8 different personalitys, no reason for me to not judge them on looks.

Everyone who has dreamies judges on looks, however all of the "ugly" villagers turn out to be very nice. Gigi and Hazel, for example, were my best friends in my old town. They are two villagers who are hated by a lot of people. Sometimes the villagers do have different dialogue in the same personality. However, there are only eight personalities, so I do judge by looks some of the time.
Yeah, I actually base some of them on looks?? Others on personality. Like I think Anka is cute okay, but her personality is **** so I don't want her anymore. But I had Diana and she's also a snooty but I prefer her? I don't know, I think it's because she's EXTREMELY cute and pink and her personality matched her. The ugliest I think though is Iggly, I literally call him Ugly Iggly and I'm not even sorry.

Okay, I can understand Harry, but... He was my next-door neighbor in City Folk, before I really got into the villager competition/collecting. So, despite how he looked, I grew to like him, though since he's cranky he was still kinda mean.
As for Katt, dang, I stand corrected. Maybe I should check her out myself. ;D
I think the only villager I'll ever consider actually ugly is Paula. Everyone else is "okay". As long as they don't move next to my mayor's house or in a bad location, or they aren't an unwanted streetpass/wi-fi move in, then they're okay with me. I can grow to like any kind of villager, and at the same time I can grow to dislike any kind as well.
I do think Pietro is creepy though, but I don't think he's ugly. Just... creepy. I actually thought he was cute at first... then I got to know him...
Of course, I still prefer cute villagers (or what my opinion of "cute" is) so I suppose I do judge by looks.

I do choose villagers based on their looks and theme.
But really I think the majority of them are not ugly and there's something for everyone. I was just thinking the other day that I'm glad they didn't go the super cutesy route with all the villagers and there are some really weird and individual designs in this game which make it cool.
That being said, some ARE really ugly (to me). Yesterday I had Beardo in my campsite and was out before I was even fully in the tent LOL.
But really I think the majority of them are not ugly and there's something for everyone. I was just thinking the other day that I'm glad they didn't go the super cutesy route with all the villagers and there are some really weird and individual designs in this game which make it cool.

The thing about "personality" is it's not actually a personality. It's code, programmed to use specific lines of dialogue and nothing more. It's not the same thing as judging a PERSON by their looks. A villager is essentially nothing more than a piece of furniture or other decoration for your town.
Personality counts but only after looks. Looks take first priority as that is the only unique aspect of that villager. Their personality is the same for every other villager of that specific personality group so it doesn't mean as much, especially when you're going to have multiples of some of them in order to even reach 10 villagers in your town you really start to realize how "fake" the repeats are because of this. Next game needs either 2 more personality types or a limit of 8 villagers per town.

I judge them based off everything. Mainly because I want them to fit into my themed towns ~ my old town was just my favorite villagers (some had a reason for being there while others didn't).

well idk bc theres characters with the same personality and better looks its like 20% personality 80% looks. the only exception on my dreamie list is wolfgang bc wow I just really love him, hes been a big part of my childhood and hes very dear to me.
I like the villagers I had in Wild World/ City Folk. They (almost) all just so happen to be adorable and extremely popular.
As for people I didn't have, if an ugly villager with an annoying personality moves in (Limberg), chances are I won't like them. But I like cute villagers like Hugh.

Chow maybe be ugly, but in a good way. He's so awesome and cool, like....Quasimodo (my 5th favorite Disney character, behind 4 Elsa, 3 Frollo, 2Stitch, 1 Oswald the Lucky Rabbit)!!!!
