Trees Won't Grow?

I've planted my trees as so:
x-x-x-x-x-x
x-x-x-x-x-x
x-x-x-x-x-x
Where x is a tree and - is a blank tile. I've left them for a couple of days and they still wont sprout. Any ideas as to why?

Is there at least space in between each row of trees?

all of them or just a few? i had some not grow also - i figured there must be some maximum to each grid plot (unless i was just planted them incorrectly)

It's just a few of them sort of in the middle of the path. There's a gap in between each row so normally they would grow.

You can't grow a tree that's completely surrounded. Either you have to plant it first and let it grow fully before planting the others, or transplant it as a full-grown adult to the middle spot.
