Something I've been curious about: do you guys have a method to where you place your trees and how far apart? Or do you just place them wherever?

Something I've been debating on fixing on my island is how sporadic my tree placement is because other towns that I've seen have their trees placed more neatly and deliberately. I like how the random placement looks but it seems like islands with the more neat placement or deemed prettier and nicer. Am I alone on this?

Most of my trees are placed neatly in lines, surrounded by fences, or arranged around houses. But I wanted that random element too so I made a little forest in one corner of my island and I love how it looks =)

Depends what theme I'm going for.
If it's man made then symmetrical, if it's natural then I'll mix it up.

I personally prefer a foresty feel, so all my trees are planted randomly. I think the islands you have seen have a more man made/urban feel to it, so that is why everything would be nice in a row. You should do whatever you like more. I'm happy with my forest personally

I have my trees placed symmetrical because I like it like that for the visual effect I try to avoid placing trees in places that make it hard for me to view stuff cause I dont want to accidentally run into a villager and push them around wondering what the heck is my path :(

I try to make it look "nice" and mix up depending where I feel a tree would look natural if placed there, some villagers have a fruit tree in their yard because I felt they'd grow their own "favorite" fruit

It depends. In New Leaf I would put a space between each tree, both vertically and horizontally. It made the trees look like they were in formation. But I ended up getting annoyed by it. So I only try to make trees as symmetrical as possible when placing them near houses, buildings, and/or paths. Otherwise I don't really care how they look anywhere else.

I have 4 "forest" zones where all the trees are lined up with either 1 space or 2 spaces between each tree, but aside from that just have some scattered wherever I haven't decided to terraform yet. I keep my cedars on the upper levels only.

I don’t like when trees are all in a line, but there’s a method to my “randomness”. I like to keep a certain distance between them and a balance in areas. Also I don’t have them in places where they are blocking the view of things.

2-3 tiles of path
1 tile of flowers on one or both sides of the path
1 tile for trees, ceders spaced 2 tiles apart, normal or fruit trees spaced 3 tiles apart because they're thicker up top and I don't want them to touch each other.
Trees of the same type in rows together, eg. 3 cherry trees in a row. I don't like mixing up the fruit type, I have to have the same fruit type in a row. This is for aesthetic reasons but it also works better practically because if you're fruit-collecting, having the same fruit trees in one place means you're using less pocket space.

I like the flower colours to compliment the trees if possible. Eg. cherry and apple trees with red or black flowers underneath. Pear trees with white, purple or blue flowers. Orange trees with orange flowers. Other colours of flowers can go in some non-tree place.
^ This is my goal but right now my flowers are all over the place.

I have both, depending on the area. My orchard trees are all evenly spaced, and trees that line paths or in the more built-up areas are also spaced. Those should look like they have been specifically planted. Up top, in my cedar forest, and to the east in the campsite, I wanted more natural looks, so those are more randomly planted.

Mostly I go for random, as I don’t generally like it when they are super lined up. But I do have a lane lined with peach trees. But the trees are spaced differently on the left side vs the right and in a couple of spots a tree is a space or two out of line to the left or the right. I like it better that way.
I think the only really symmetrically designed spot on my island is just in front of the museum, partly because it’s just behind town hall so space is limiter and partly because it suits the classical design of the museum.
