Trading Villagers Question

I was wondering if someone had the answer to this: if I have a villager in boxes and my friend has another villager in boxes at the same time. If we visit each other and will we be able to trade those two villagers? Or does there need to be a plot physically available for the villager to inhabit at that time?

you need an empty plot to get a villager

Boxed villagers don't count as empty plots, so unfortunately one of you guys will have to drop your villager off somewhere first.
