So, I got the game on new years eve and have been playing pretty consistently ever since. I have T.I.Y and such, so I have certainly played the game for a number of days. Yet, my town tree still only has two clusters but is able to show the credits. Any help with this? Thanks

Maybe this is your problem: If you play it for HOURS a day you could reach 200 hours pretty quickly, but in order for it to grow, you need to have played a certain number of unique days as well. Say you need 20 hours and 20 days for the tree to grow to the next stage. You could reach say 20 hours in 3 days but you would have had to at least gone on the game one time a day for 20 days for it to actually grow.

That's exactly it.
From the pictures on the animal crossing wiki, it looks like you can tell growth stage by the thickness of the trunk. If your ingame date is set to the same as the current date then the leaves will still be growing back from winter, so even if you should have more clusters of leaves, there's not as many
