This might seem kind of silly, but I’m faced with a dilemma I feel like I never had in New Leaf! I got the villagers that I most like (for a variety of reasons) to move into my island very quickly this time, comparatively. This is because I spent a /lot/ of time island hopping. I never traded in NL so just sort of went with the flow.

The trouble is, I think loads and loads of villagers are super cute and interesting and I’d love to have them live on my island. I keep feeling like I would want to move one of my existing villagers out to try someone new, but I’m very attached to everyone I have (and learned my lesson the hard way when I let my starting villager Biff move out in the hopes of finding Genji, and was very sad about not having enough room for both of them.)

I’d love some advice!! For those who have an island with villagers they’re happy with and attached to, what is your strategy when you see and like other villagers not on your island?

Well, I’m kinda just playing without dreamies right now, the only exception being anyone whose card I don’t have, and new villagers. If I get an empty plot and I find Static, Dom, Judy, or Sherb I won’t pass them up and they aren’t leaving, but if Snake or Portia wanna leave and I feel like I’ve had them long enough for now then I’ll let them and try out someone else because I have their amiibo cards already if I want them back!
If you’re too attached to all your villagers to do that sort of thing then one suggestion I can give for you is maybe let just your 10th spot be reserved for cycling, letting that villager go when it’s their time and then getting another cute one in their place. You can always try to find a certain one again if you regret letting them move, especially if you have amiibo cards.

My method is I got all villagers that I like and will only be replacing one of them as and when a camper shows up that I like MORE than the villager I LEAST like in my island. So I ranked them from 1-10, and I’ll boot out the rank 10 only if I find someone I like more in the campsite. But I wouldn’t let them go on their own and risk an open plot of land.

i have a set list of 10 villagers that i want - if i come across a villager in any personality that i like more than my set dreamie for that personality, i’ll simply swap them out. for me, it just takes the occasional decision of trying to figure out who i’d like more ;u;

It depends. I know for a fact that I had Ozzie way too many times now, so as I got him again, I will make him leave, even if I have no problems with him. It was and is still hard for me to choose 10 Villagers, because there are way too many I like. But somehow with random Campsite Villagers and Island Hopping I got some interesting ones, which I ended up liking more, even if I paid no attention to them in the previous Games.

It’s mostly just a Gut Feeling. Like you see a Villager you like and really want on your island, then choose one you don’t feel super attached to or someone who gave you their Photos already (like Anchovy in New Leaf for me) and then you let them go. If you have their Photos, you don’t feel that guilty anymore for letting them leave, because you already had Max Friendship with them.

I'd say wait a few weeks/months. You'll likely find after a while that you're more attached to some than others, and by that point it will become apparent which villagers have overstayed their welcome.

You could consider personalities- I have so many viallgers I love that are peppy but I’ve decided to only have two of them because I don’t want to invite more and then get attached! I want variety in their dialogue and sometimes I really wish that some of the peppy villagers I liked were other personalities

Megan is just sooo cute and I am so happy she's on my island rn! She has little blue pa pads which is cute and she waters my flowers. I agree, there are just far too many adorable lil villagers which is hard. What I like to do is visit other islands who have villagers I am interested in so I can decide if I would like to try and find them for my island.

i'm going to keep 8 or 9 out of the 10 dreamies that i had from new leaf because i'm too attached to them. i definitely do want to have new and different cute villagers so i might keep the last one or two open spots for villagers that will come and go. kinda want to have judy and sherb on my island at some point

I’m actually in the same dilemma! I’m thinking of getting rid of my least favourite one and swapping out for someone new.
I feel like if I did and regretted it I’d always find a way to get said villager back.
It’s a tough decision.

It is a really hard decision because there are a lot of really nice villagers! Even the underappreciated ones look a whole lot nicer in NH! My rule of thumb right now is that if I have their amiibo, I can prep them to have them move in at any time I have a free space if I want them. I prioritize the villages I don't have the amiibos for right now if I can. My goal is to get all my villagers pics before letting them move out, so when they move in they are going to be with me for a while. By the time I get their picture, I am sure I will be willing to let them explore the world. Especially if I have their amiibo card.

i think it's fun to cycle them out. i keep the few that i'm super attached to and let the others go when i find someone else i want. i think it's easier to do this in NH because you can get villagers back immediately. so if you really regret letting someone go, you can always get them to move back in!

I really appreciate everyone’s responses! I think I’ll wait and try to get all my villagers pictures before I think about any new ones.

I definitely feel this. I had to put a firm cap on the number of normal villagers I have (3....) just because I think so many of them are wonderful but I wanted to keep the personalities as balanced as possible.
