How is Tom Nook mean and greedy? He never harasses you if you owe him money. He gives you all the time you need to pay him back and the "raccoon goons" are never sent after you if you don't pay him. He's polite and gentleman-like. Plus, he freaks out if you fall in a pitfall while you're looking for a plot to put your house.
He's probably my favorite of the non-villager characters.

He's not that bad in my opinion. Not great either but not absolutely bad.
It isn't really that hard to make lots of money in new leaf in comparison to the previous versions. Plus, the guy's just making a living. He doesn't even hound you on making bells to pay off your debts. He just goes with the flow and lets you pay whenever. Plus it's a house, you have the biggest one in comparison to the villagers that you can make into a mansion so expensive is normal.
On the other hand, the one who does hound you unnecessarily would be Resetti. Now he's a meanie.
