Today at work...

I would have freaked out. That's awesome! I really need a new 3DS and I loooove Majora's Mask so that surprise would have been the best. I'm jealous but also happy for you :)

He's an awesome boss! Our store got a restock of the MM XL and he called everyone at 8AM to tell them so we could pre-order it.
I didn't get it though just because I don't wanna be a zelda poser. I've never played the game. And the gold color didn't really pique my interest.

I do plan on getting a New 3DS if I manage to nab an MM edition, but otherwise I will probably wait. I do plan on getting Majora's Mask either way though, although probably not on release day. c: And that sounds awesome!

If you don't mind me asking an unrelated question, how do you like working at Gamestop? I might be moving into the city soon which means chances are high I'm going to end up working retail again sigh. ;-; I'm considering applying at EB Games (I'm in Canada), so I'm sure there are slight differences from the US, but just curious. I've heard they used to go by a sales motivated kind of structure (almost as if by commission even though it's not) and now are more customer-service oriented. I'm mostly just curious if your performance is judged solely by sales numbers, as I've worked in places like that before and unless you have a great manager it's not my cup of tea.

Well, to start, I'll be 19 in March, and this is my 6th job since I turned 16.
I mostly quit my jobs for the lack of hours. My Gamestop is in a town with a population of 25K people. So it's pretty small compared to other places around us. I have heard horror stories about working at Gamestop. Everyone I knew who worked there, which was around 3 people, told me to never apply there.
But, I have a passion for Nintendo, and I knew everyone that worked at my Gamestop because I went in there maybe 2-3 times a week. I noticed everyone there had their 'special' preference. But no one knew about nintendo like I did. I got hired on in December with a total of five other seasonal. I was the only one they kept.
Gamestop DOES push their sales. But, they don't want you to go up and shove a game in someone's face. They want you to recommend it. Tell them about it, give them a feel for it.
Consoles aren't something my store really pushes, mostly because not everyone has the money for that.
We do get daily percentages based on how many people signed up for the Pro card, the free card, how many reservations you got, and how much stuff was sold under your log-in (so how much money you made the store that day).
Gamestop really likes to push used items, because if we sell a new game for 60$, we only get 5$ out of that. Because we don't own it. The used stuff, we own. So we get everything.
I would say it has a feel as if you're working off commission. But you're not going to get fired over sales.
Personally, my boss is probably the best one I've met in terms of Gamestop bosses. He is super kind and understanding. He tells me what I need to work on, but also tells me what I'm doing really good on. I once sold one of every console in one day. So he likes that I'm a good sales person. I, however, do not like pushing the Pro card on people. Because if you're a gamer, you probably already have it. So I ask if they wanna sign up. They say no. I'm done. My manager however, expects us to ask, then explain, then ask again. He wants them to basically say no three times. Just to make sure, and by then people are probably frustrated, and I don't like doing that.

I would say it depends on the Gamestop you work at.
We get a 15% discount on everything except brand new Systems.
But it does count on brand new games, used games, used systems, new or used accessories, or just random items like t-shirts or keychains as well. (Technically it's 25% on used games if you have the pro card).
Also, you can check out and borrow any games (new or used) to play them! Policy says 4 days, but my manager doesn't care how long we keep them, as long as it's not the last one in stock.

Overall, Gamestop is the best job I've ever had. I don't get bashed for all the bad things I do. I get praised for doing well. I love the people I work with, and it's just an overall great environment.

Edit - and the discount counts on any place owned by gamestop. Such as EB games, or places like SimplyMac that sell apple products.

This is basically my concern as I am the same way.

I have noticed at the EB I would be applying at they ask once and that is it, so I guess that's a good sign for the location. And everyone seems nice, that's basically why I go there because the other local one is a lot smaller and most of the employees sound like they want to punch you.

But anyways, thank you for all the information, it's very helpful! I would talk to the people at the store, as I said they are all very nice, but I feel odd asking people about their jobs in that kind of situation, I guess.

I'm mostly considering it because like you, I enjoy gaming (obviously, haha) so I figured it I end up working retail I might as well be selling something I know about/like, rather than clothes or something. It seems like the environment would be a little more interesting since it's something I enjoy.

Anyways thank you again, I appreciate you taking the time to answer in such detail! c:

My manager doesn't really say too much as long as we at least ask. Which is all I do.

But honestly it's the first job I've had that time flies! I'm always busy and don't feel like I'm actually working because of the environment.
If you apply do a little research before hand. They like to ask trick questions about stuff concerning other companies they own.
So make sure you read up on companies they own and get to know those companies. They may or may not ask you!

Good luck if you apply! ^^
