Well, you got one of the cranky suggestions out of the way! Good luck getting them to suggest the bridge you want.
For me, when I started playing the game, I just kept increasing my friendship with all my villagers, and in return I got pinged a lot as I decorated the town. I rarely used the diving trick, and I kept getting 1 request easily nearly every day.
As it happed, I found that I usually played in the morning hours in the early days, where only Jock and Normal villager were up, and I ended up getting all the requests from those villagers first. The timing of when you play might help in getting works projects you want as well!

Have you any idea of the timing each villagers are out?? I know someone said cranky are out at night I have no idea about the others
