I'm not too bad at fishing, but I can never manage to catch a shark. I want to fill up my museum (and encyclopedia), which I obviously can't do without catching each type of shark. So, any hints or tips?

Also, I'm using a silver fishing rod, if it matters...

I've always closed my eyes and listened when I fish. That way, I'm not psyched out by the fish going for the bobber.

Much of it is all in the timing, you could also try and get a silver rod (I've got loads I'll even give one to you) to give yourself more time to catch those sharks.

What you could do is scare away the smaller fish and force sharks to spawn, if you want to just focus on them only.

EDIT: oh, missed the silver rod part. Sorry about that. :(

Scare little fish, but make sure to walk if you see a fin. Try not to get riled up and reel too early before the shark even bites, just keep calm and listen.

You could try practicing on shark mini games on the island! I usually listen by sound when I catch a shark though.

I close my eyes and I listen for the bite. I like to circle my finger around the A button counter clock wise while it is nibbling. Me circling it gives me enough time to not fall for feints and to go for it when I hear the bite. That's what I do.

You might also want to use headphones and raise the volume so you can hear it better if you have trouble hearing it from the games speakers.

What always helped me was watching, actually. TURN THE SOUND UP. I can't do it without the sound.

Anticipate. It's way harder to catch them in this game, I feel. I'm on high alert the second I cast into the water. I watch for when they lunge at the bobber and I'm ready to press the button each time they lunge. But the second I hear the bobber go under, I press the button as fast as I can.
I can say this method has caught me way more sharks than closing my eyes and listening. But it's all about preference and reflexes.

My advice is take as many tours of the island that you can involving fishing to get practice. Like everyone has said, LOUD is good. And, what helped me the most is applying a small amount of pressure on the "hit" button. Gets them nearly every time.

You need to focus on audio and not visuals. You may get button-happy so press A as much as you can before, to get rid of that early button pressing vibe. (≧∇≦)
