Figured the Fishing Tourney would be a good time to post this.

I'm sure you've had a situation where you are fishing something big, only to hit the A button prematurely. It's incredibly annoying. Something I have been doing lately that I find really helps is closing my eyes and just listening to the audio. I think that watching the shadow increases the chances of you getting nervous. Looking at the screen is just not that helpful anyway. I tried fishing without audio once and it was horrible.

Basically as soon as the fish starts coming towards you, close your eyes or look away from the screen. Let me know if it helps at all.

I do the same thing!! I've found that the shadows make me jumpy, but when I close my eyes I can relax a little and hit A when the time is right.

My friend couldn't catch a moray eel for the life of her (we were on a bus for two hours and for about half of that she was trying to catch one, lol). I eventually had her give it to me, I closed my eyes and caught one nearly immediately. She does the same thing now and it really helps her out.

That is exactly what I do as well! When I first started playing New Leaf I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I sucked at fishing. I started listening for the audio cue instead of looking and it's been smooth reeling ever since!

Though I can remember in the Gamecube version I used a visual cue for fishing, but it was much more simpler and easier to tell in that version.

Hmm I'll have to try this when I go to the island later tonight. I definitely have a bad case of happy fingers, especially with the sharks.

I can do it either way.

Just tell yourself that you control your nerves.
Your nerves do not control you. ^_^

Yeah, this advice doesn't really apply to the Gamecube version since I don't think it has audio cues. I would have put it in general AC discussion if it weren't for that.

looking at the screen always makes me have a lesser chance of catching the fish especially if it's a huge shadow or a shark. I always look away at something else or close my eyes as well.

I'm kind of weird I guess, because I like having both the visual and audio cue. I can do it without the visual, but it makes me a bit nervous doing it

I also can't do fishing while playing some other audio like a YouTube video. I usually end up noticing the cue too late and lose the fish.

Listening only DEFINITELY helps out in my opinion! I do still get nervous and hit early though when it's a huge fish or shark, and if I'm a bit in a noisy environment.

definitely will try this sometime!
I also have the same problem where I press A waay too early, it really frustrates me & i even get more nervous when it's a shark & i end up messing my chance
I wanted to depend on looking at the screen & watching the fish bite the bait, I sometimes even mute the audio & fish ( which went horribly wrong lool)
