So I now have four cartridge towns and one digital. I worried it would be a lot of work, lol, but strangely, I am enjoying AC more now than ever. Having fifty villagers is pretty awesome and five towns to unleash my creative jones on is so utterly freeing. I have also taken to swapping villagers from one town to another (except for Shika, which is all deer). This means that most villagers have been in two to three of my towns and all my mayors are known by everyone when they travel around. Everyone speaks fondly of my other towns and their mayors and it's like a huge family.
And it takes the stress off in a weird way. If someone unexpectedly winds up in boxes, I can always do some creative shuffling. That is why I like to keep a temporary floating villager in most towns that I can let go of if necessary. And inviting a new villager in makes it fun for me because I can meet new ones and potentially fall in love
I don't keep a set schedule, but somehow it all seems to work out. Shrugs.
