imagine for a second if the in-game camera could rotate 360 degrees (like how it is inside houses, except everywhere) instead of being fixed at the same angle all the time.

this is something i think about sometimes when i’m playing. it’s a pretty simple concept and yet i feel like it would (literally) be a game changer.
it would add so much depth and make many more opportunities for photo ops among other things.

i don’t know if there’s a specific reason for the camera being like this. i’ve been playing since wild world but i guess i haven’t questioned it really since new how horizons. anyhow, i’m curious how many of you guys have thought about this before 🤔 lmk!

It's a creative choice. Why change something that isn't broken? I doubt NH is built for it to have the camera angle in different directions now. It would probably be like that Smash Ult feature with the cardboard binoculars. Or whatever that Nintendo Labo thing was. It just looks off when using it because the stages weren't designed to be looked at every angle and so far away so you can see where things were cropped.

They could probably do a different view, with a camera that could see every angle, for the next game in the series. Just right now I could see switching to checking the south side being off because they didn't have to design the game in that angle.

Considering that New Horizons has you on an open island, this concept could work with ease. It's probably just not done due to hardware issues, or to save development time.

It might just be because I have mannequins everywhere now to make a rock garden, but I don't want to imagine the buffering and lag that would come with having a 360-degree view. A 360-degree view would definitely be a nice-to-have when terraforming or placing buildings, but I personally don't see the benefits outweighing the hardware and performance limitations during regular gameplay.

If they had to add textures to the backs of trees, houses, fencing, etc. then the game might be even more laggy and take longer to load, take up more catche space... but, yeah, that'd be cool lol

This game causes my system to freak out and blow hot air. I can only imagine what it'd be like if it also had to process a fully 360 functioning camera.

The camera stuff is all an illusion. If you look up some NH "out of bounds" type of videos you'll see that the world itself is actually flat. I'm not kidding. Don't let yourself be brainwashed by the Nookian government!
woah yeah, i’ve never heard of that before but now i need to go see for myself. brb

tru, it’s basically a fantasy at this point but still crazy to imagine. i’d love to be able to look out on the open ocean like in real life you know? and actually see the horizon

Everyone brings up a good point that adding 360 view would cause the game to lag more - but if that weren’t the case, then absolutely I wish we could have 360 view the three camera angles we get are just not enough for me and frustrate me. I feel like we could do so much more design-wise as well if we had 360 view.
but yeah I wouldn’t want the game to lag more than it already does because of this.

I said this before but game devs will delete back faces to save space when they UV unwrap their 3D models. It's a really important thing to do.

Buildings, rocks and etc that can't be rotated, probably don't have back faces. It's to conserve space and not to overwork the game engine.

that makes a lot of sense actually

It's just a smart move. Why create stuff that no one is going to see and will never see unless the hack the game in some way. Animators do this all the time. They don't need to draw someone's entire body to the fullest detail if half of it is hidden behind a desk.

I personally wouldn’t want 360 camera. On the sims games they have 360 camera and I kind of feel like it’s too much, and slows the game sometimes. It was a bit complicated, so I’m ok with this simple camera feature. I do wish we could rotate a bit more Outside like we can inside the houses though.

Shesez did an out of bound video on ACNH a while ago, and it's a fun watch:

The trees aren't even fully modeled on the back and the buildings are weird on the back too. Personally, for me, my island is already lagging like crazy in a lot of areas, I can't possibly imagine my switch to run a 360 camera with fully modeled items on top of all that.

It would be great for photos and it would be really useful. No more trying to find stuff behind trees/buildings (I know you can press "down" but it's not consistent in places).

Unfortunately, I don't see this happening any time soon. Not only has the current view become a classic of the AC series, but it would require modelling the back of things like buildings so it would come at the cost of performance and content in other areas. Maybe one day if it's released on a powerful enough console!

As someone who's played all western AC games, I think this kind of camera control would've been refreshing.

But I can see why it's not a thing. The game already starts to drop frames when you place a lot of things outside, so imagine how bad it would be if they fully modelled the trees and bushes. If you look at boundary break you can see they only modelled half of the trees and bushes. Surprisingly they modelled the back of buildings fully though.

If they intended a game to use a 360 camera, they would have to alter how we see the game. Right now, when you see a fruit tree, you always see the fruit. If you looked at it as-is from the back, you wouldn't see the 3 fruits cuz they're on the other side. It's the same thing with houses. We always see them on the door side. If you could rotate houses the same way we do furniture, there might be a use for it, but with everything else it's just simply their design choice. I mean, look at fossils and money spots. They don't spawn directly behind cliffs or houses. They programmed it this way BECAUSE we can't see behind those things.

Yeah its programmed that way because the original animal crossing games had only one perspective and they kept it that way ever since, and its become the staple animal crossing experience. If we had full 360 degree range the game would have a completely different aesthetic/feeling in my opinion, which I personally wouldn't like.

Honestly, the Switch blows hot air with any game. Because it should do that, or else you'd have a problem. Some games just get the console a little more heated up than others. The Switch could probably cook an egg while playing LOZ: Breath of the Wild.

Not to the point where I can hear it venting hard. That was my point. I can only imagine how much louder it would get if the 360 camera + fully modeled land were real.
