They brought back the mechanic to buy furniture from your villagers

I didn't realize this. How can you get them to do it? I want every single thing in Shino's house so I'd love for her to offer to let me buy things.

Once you're invited to their house, you can touch the furniture and then talk to the villager repeteadly until they say something close to: "Hey, you like my (item)? I could part with it for (whatever ammount of bells) if you want it." After that, they should let you buy some items from their house.

I don't know if it's related, but my newer villagers (one moved in yesterday and the other moved in today) haven't invited me into their houses yet.

This almost reminds me of the Flea Market event from Wild World and City Folk. For those who don't know it was an event where every villager in your town is trying to sell and buy different types of furniture, but I remember it being annoying whenever you're trying to decorate your home and then your villager knocks on your door and lets themselves in. They look at your furniture and they ask "How much are you charging" now the pricing was pretty limited if you try to price your item around 5,000 bells they will say "What no I am not paying it for that much" so you're pretty much forced to give them a lower amount. Once they buy it, they take it with them.

Also if you try to buy the villager's furniture yourself I think if I remember this right (someone correct me if I'm wrong) but not all villagers can give you their furniture. They may say things like "Oh well I have that item already sold to (insert villager name here) so I just have to wait for them to pick it up" So it was RNG of what type of furniture they have selling and it was kinda hard to tell which one they would want. So yeah thats how the Flea Market event worked.

i discovered this when beau invited me to his house, and i was pleasantly surprised! though, my first thought wasn’t that it was a feature from new leaf, but instead the first thing that came to mind was the flea market event that took place in wild world/city folk every weekend. i didn’t care for it much then, but it’s nice to have a feature similar to it in new horizons now.

i was curious if it would come back, it's good to know it is! (even though the only reason i do this was to redesign their houses in new leaf, and it seems we can now thanks to HHP lol)
