Alright I have a vague idea of what the void is. Someone moves out and no one takes them while they're in boxes, they're into the void, right? Well how the heck do you clear it? How can you tell if someone else's void is clear? The whole concept is really confusing lol sorry I should probably know this but I don't

You have the basics correct... Villager moves with no place to go... In the void !!
You need only to go visit a town that is full (10 villagers) and that should clear your villagers lingering in the void.
From what I've read in guides and chats visiting other towns is the only way to clear your void.
Hope that helps a little anyway !!

The void is what I'm feeling now that The Woods are gone :(

yep, you're right. whenever a villager moves out but isn't adopted by anyone, they go into your void. they hang about there until you visit a town with ten villagers, and afterwards your void is considered "clear". keep in mind, this doesn't always work, and there are lots of cases where someone cleared their void even more than once, but that villager ended up moved into someone else's town months later. i've never that happen to me in the years that NL has been out, but it's a good idea to keep that in mind as a worst case scenario.

here's a really helpful guide on the void that can give you any info i might've forgotten to add. :D

Despite what anyone says, you CANNOT clear your void. Your void is any of the last 16 villagers to leave your town that weren't adopted by someone or streetpassed theire way into someone's town. Your game remembers them no matter what you do.

they say if a villager moves out and nobody adopts them from you then they are "in the void," which i guess is stored in the game's cache. if you then visit somebody, receive a visitor, or random streetpass, the other person can receive the voided villager as a move-in for their town if they have openings. they say that your void clears after this, even if you visit somebody with no open villager slots. (i'm not sure if you can have multiple villagers "in the void" and if so, whether they all clear out or not after a streetpass). i think there are threads out there explaining all the variables involved. i'm not sure how long a moved-out villager remains in the cache/void.

I've read somewhere that after some period of days, your void is cleared. Like however many days it takes for them to show up on Main Street or something? I'm not quite sure, either.

Usually a villager leaves your void in 30 days. If you want to clear your void immediately though, visit a town with 10 villagers. This will erase the villager from your void. There's no way of really telling if another users' void is clear since they have to tell you this information but you'll be definitely able to tell if a users' void isn't clear if you have their villager move into your town the next day when you have space and the villager says they can from (insert town name.) You won't get anyone from their void if you have 10 villagers though.

I visited a town with 10 villagers and the next day I still had villagers in my void so idk if this really works. I even saw a villager I sold in there so idk haha.

You can't see a villager that is in your void. The past residents of your town that appear on Main Street are not in the void they are just visiting you.

The system "Remembering" your past 16 villagers is not the same as having villagers in the void. The void is where villagers, who have moved from your town, are waiting for a new town, with space for them. Villagers waiting in the void who move to a new town, will talk about coming from your town and will hum your town tune. Once you "clear them from the void" after you visit a town with 10 villagers or host someone who has 10 villagers, they are gone and anyone visiting you or connecting via streetpass will not get one of your old villagers.

It is one and the same. You game remembers the past 16 villagers to move out. It remembers your villagers for multiple reasons, both for your void, and to have them visit. The only thing visiting a town with 10 villagers does is prevent anyone from moving because there is no room, it does not clear anything. You can't overwrite game data.

There are plenty of topics out there where people have done that and still get voided villagers. It doesn't work. It's a random factor.
