Ok, how does the whole exchanging work? I know there are some villagers that I'd DEFINITELY want, but I have no clue how this even works ._.

You go to the village of whoever has your favorite villager, speak to the villager until he/she agrees to move to your town and that's it, then you wait for him/her to appear in you village..
Note: THIS ONLY WORKS IF YOU HAVE 9 OR LESS VILLAGERS, when you have 10 you can't accept anyone.

Edit: They also have to bee all packed up for this to work, sorry for forgetting the most important part. And thanks for reminding me about it.
