The Villager Double-Standard

Sadly people are really judgmental especially with looks. I think it happens in real life based off how people look too. People with more cute features probably get away with a lot and are less often perceived as rude or threatening.

I hate the dialog for the lazy villagers in this game. The bug talk just annoys me. Because I don't like Broccolo's design, the bug talk was completely intolerable. But because I love Bob's design, I feel like I can ignore it.

That's really the only difference - aesthetics can make something better even if it's otherwise the same.

I adamantly disagree with half of what that article says.
I know it's someone else's opinion, but I was genuinely offended when they called Pietro a "horror". And I continue to be offended every single time I read that somewhere on the internet.
Maybe I'm weird, but I lOve clowns. I want one for my next birthday party. They're adorable, and quite franky, hilarious. I hate the "creepy" stigma that's been put around them and how it's now been laced around a cute little sheep dude who just wants to be friendly....

*COUGH*
anyway
Yeah... ehh... well, it is just an article on other people's opinions. Don't get too worked up about it (says me lol). One person's (or a hundred people's) opinions on a villager really shouldn't change what other people think. Y'know, sometimes I hate articles like that. I'd love it if they DIDN'T exist and, if I found a villager on a mystery island (like maybe... Beardo) I could just think and form my own opinions on said villager and not think about anyone else's opinions. I also kinda hate how people just have to trash on these villagers. Guess what, y'all. Cube is just like Genji. Or Dom. OR ANY OTHER JOCK. If you're like me, then you might think of it this way: Insulting one jock (Cube) is exaclty like insulting all the rest... or maybe if you're just insulting their appearances
idK
But it's not good to insult things anYWAY!!! IMAGINE IF CUBE WERE IRL PERSON!!! WOULD YOU WALK UP TO HIS FACE AND SAY "UGLY BIRD1!!!!" AND MAKE ARTICLES ABOUT HOW ugly HE IS?? nO. cALL ME CRAZY, but i think we should practice proper manners and etiquette in our ACNH world the same way we would IRL. Just because it's all "fake..." DOESN'T MEAN WE HAVE TO BE JERKS
Y'know, that says a LOT about who u are lol. bEing super kind to your bestie with the mauled face and then flipping to bird to lil ol' Cube, who is practically our bestie too

honestly my only opinion towards villagers ranking is the only ranking that should matter to you is your own top 10 villagers. or even top 20, heck who am i to stop you. other people's opinions really have no relevance to me in this context 🤷🏻‍♀️

The basic dialogue is pretty much the same for the personality types, so a lot of it does come down to preferences in design. The addition of hobbies though does add some much needed variety, imo. I have two normals - Megan and Kiki. Megan has the nature hobby and Kiki has the education hobby. And surprisingly they are not always repeating the same dialogue, especially now that I have a higher level of friendship.

I too don't get the Pietro hate ☹️ I guess because I've never found clowns creepy, I mean I always knew it was just a person in a funny costume and that was it. Is this widespread fear and disgust coming from "IT" or something? Lol.

There’s really no point of making articles like this when villagers with the same personality will say the same thing I don’t think these articles your talking about is about the personality they are covering it as their personality in reality it’s because the villager isn’t cute Ankha is just like any other snooty villager the same goes for the rest this is what I think is happening

I hope I explained that right lol

I will say that in my experience, the expressiveness of character reactions ends up mattering a lot more than I think most people realize in how much meaning I can attribute to a villager over another. This is why it’s always a good idea to interact with a villager you’re thinking of moving in, as some are kinda boring in motion even if they are cute in stills.
This is very true! I have found some villagers I expected to like are not as interesting when I encounter them in the game, such as on a mystery island. And other times a villager I did not initially like based on pictures In the wiki page are very cute when I see them in game (ursala and Rory for example)

it is also hard to gauge whether I like a villager by scanning an amiibo to harv’s island, cause they are pretty lifeless there.

I don't get why people hate villagers because how they talk. Like, c'mon all villagers have the same dialogue! I understand if it's about the looks, cause everyone have opinions. But about they talk/act? Lol

I agree with you. I do kind of cringe when youtubers or other talk about how they dislike one villager and like the other because of their dialogue and such when they have the same personality. I know there are also hobbies that go along with certain villagers that change their dialogue a bit, but in my opinion, there is not a huge noticeable difference.

I think it's based on design a lot more now than it used to be, at least for me. In past games, my liking of villagers would often be altered by my experience with them. Of course all personalities have the same dialogue, but since previous games' dialogue had more variety/were more interesting, I'd often get different lines from the same personalities (especially in WW where they talked about their hobbies and stuff) and so I would occasionally like (and more rarely, dislike) a villager based on the lines they happened to give me. I didn't care for Apollo for years, but after staying a couple of months in my last WW town, he started giving me some really sweet lines and it became a lot harder to let him go because I realized we'd become friends over time. Queenie talked about a specific dinosaur that meant a lot to her as a kid, while my other snooties had different hobbies and wouldn't mention that, so that made her stick out.

But in NL and NH, I think there's less of a reason to judge villagers based on dialogue. It hasn't done much to shape my liking of villagers in either game, apart from starter villagers when the dialogue is still fresh, because everything is way more watered down. Relationship development is less obvious (contrasting my Apollo example, Bruce behaves exactly the same way towards me in NH now as he did in April). Everyone is super nice as well, which is why I don't really get it when people say they don't like certain villagers because they were mean in the recent games (such as Eloise in the article). Pre-NL, I could definitely understand that happening, but now, not so much.
