I've decided to start a little experiment. To play "vanilla" is to go into the game without any information or advantages.

My theory: Even if the villager isn't particularly popular, if the player spends enough time with them, they will form attachments to said villager.

What you do:
Start a town. (Resetting for layout is OK, but not for villagers.)

Do whatever you like with your town, but if you TT, do it day-by-day.
The catch? No adopting 'dreamies' from here or anywhere else. (For one month at least.)
Adopting villagers from the campsite is OK.

Tell me if you want to try this out, and we can record the results here. I think it will be an interesting research project, and may change your view on villagers.

I thinks that this sounds pretty fun, but I just found the perfect map with villagers I like :x.

I'll do this :) But, I don't want to restart just for this, haha. I have 10 villagers currently, and I invited in that I like, 1 that I grew to like :x

Sounds pretty fun but I could never reset my town with all my Babys in it. ;) I will concider this challenge if I ever get another cartridge.

I agree with your theory. For my main town I have 7 of the 10 dreamies that I planned on having before I even started the game. The other 3 (Mott, Fuchsia, Ruby) are villagers that moved into my town on their own, but that I became so attached to that I'm not willing to let go of. I'd be extremely upset if any of them left my town, I actually care more about them than I do about some of my dreamies.

It's how I've always played the game. Though I've admittedly picked up a couple of my villagers from the trading forum, it's only been along the lines of "My snooty just moved out and I need a new one for PWP requests, anything'll do". I've found personally that it's quite true about getting attached to the villagers.

I actually unconsciencely did all this project asked for xD

I love them too much to let them go, but a good project.
My younger cousin plays like this because she didn't know it was possible to pick your villagers in the beginning. When I told her she was already attached to hers pretty strongly. After she saw how cute some of the others where however....
I should have never tempted her.

I had 10 villagers before I gave away Lily on this forum(I've never gotten a dreamie from here, all of dreamies nowadays are quite expensive)

Lily, Cesar, and Vic never clicked with me for some reason. Friga... I'm still having thoughts about.

The truth is, I never played 'meta', I've always played vanilla. I never knew how to trade (still don't know but I don't want to), I never knew that Marshal was the most popular or that Hopper was the bottom of the barrel. I love all my villagers, who come and go. If someone moves, tears will be shed, but that's it. New animal come and you can meet them and forge a relationship.

The only information I looked up before starting was how my face would turn out. ;) Apart from that, I'm all vanilla. But I do agree on your theory.. I became attached to a lot of my (unpopular) starter villagers. Or perhaps I was just lucky in getting what I liked from the start. :P
