I read something once about a particular thing they put in shampoo that makes your hair get greasy quicker after it's used perpetuating the need for shampoo. If you leave it without, your natural oils will settle down and your hair will be fine. All anecdotal but I wouldn't put it past "Big Shampoo". Maybe your villagers are in the know?
