I never reset, trade, or buy villagers. I like getting random villagers, and when I get one I really like, I am happy because of it.

I'm just so picky. There are A LOT of villagers that I'd love to have, but there are also villagers that would suck the fun out of the game for me if they set up shop. I could always reset I guess and have the villager be sorta random...but I also care about house placement too since my town is dressed up. It's easier for me to stick with dreamies or villagers that I REALLY like at the very least.

As much as I dislike saying bye to my villagers I always look forward to see who moves in next. I also don't mind redoing my paths for them as it gives me the reason to redecorate my town. I put project items where I don't want anyone so it works out for me so far.
