I heard this, but do not know if this is true.

*the more your friendship will grow

I remember reading about or hearing from someone (wow, real specific Xiphos *eyeroll*), that you should have the first two lines of a letter filled at the least for it to count towards friendship, and the letter badge. So I always just send my villagers letters with "wwwwwwwww" throughout the entire two lines, as w's are quicker than other letters because they take up more space. Like, imagine using l's. *shivers* No way Jos?.

So yeah, I think there's probably actually a minimum character # count or something, but this is the rule I go by and I've gotten many letter badges in the past by doing it, as well as presents from villagers and increased friendship.

Hope this helps!

I've sent letters with a simple "Hello" and my friendship was increased but maybe that could have been tasks I've done for villagers?

I don't know -
in wild world you could not get away with writing gibberish - you had to write letters with correctly spelt words and punctuation.
Certain words seemed to be recognised: these may be: friend, thanks (or thank you), present, (possibly the word 'gift') & possibly the word love.

I can't remember now if the length of the letter was determined by number of words, the number of letters or possibly the number of lines written.

I think it was fairly similar in accf - in both games what you got back as a present was determined by the length of the letter.

This seems to have been changed in acnl - for a start you now don't always get a present back with the letter, and the presents you do get back don't seem to relate to the length of the letter.

The number of lines you write may be important - so I've modified my letter writing to this:

Here's a gift for my friend!
Love your present!
Thanks!

three lines and they seem to like this (got my gold letter badge in several towns). I alter it every so often.

I have sometimes written an 'angry' letter to a villager (eg when I fullfill a request with a good present & get given a toilet in return!)
I tend to vent my feelings in a letter to them - I've got replies that seem to indicate that the game to some extent 'gets' it' - as the villager says - I didnt' realise you were so passionate or similar, well something slightly different from the norm.

Letter writing is no way near as satisfying as it was in previous games, but it has got me bamboo & persimmons as return gifts in fairly new towns.

I've noted that when you first start sending letters to the villagers the replies & gifts are enthusiastic, it tails off after time, tho they always send a reply back, about half with a gift included.

EDIT: letter writing may well be important in friendship levels as it was in previous games, but I don't think its of major importance (I'm fairly sure you can get their photo without any or only a little letter writing).
What does seem to be important is fulfilling tasks where you get the little 'tring' sound on completion - and the value/rarity of the gift you give them plays a part - eg they ask for stag, give them a golden stag, they ask for fruit give them the perfect variety etc.

I write all my villagers lots of w's and m's in my letters, except for Croque. I tend to be a bit flirty in my letters to him... <3

I read somewhere that it takes 3 lines to be filled up to get the letter badge. but I do the same and fill the letter with w's and m''s

Am I the only one who actually writes heartfelt and serious letters to my animals? Like really, I actually take the time to make puns and send them thoughtful gifts and have a little fun with it.

Like I could understand if you're spamming for the letter badge but why not have some fun with it? Be creative!

As for the length, I don't know if it really counts. I do know, however, that the game picks up on certain phrases, which can affect an animal's response (Like if they see "sad" in the letter it'll usually be understood). But it's a very primitive understanding and your animals won't really understand slang or context much. But still, they do somewhat "get it"

I'm best friends with most of my villagers because I tend to always do their favors and I send letters and gifts now and then. Nothing crazy or anything. I just play the game and value their existence, and they love me accordingly.

Since I try not to burden my friends with my problems and ever since one of them started talking to me less (I used to tell him everything), I tell my villagers my thoughts when I'm feeling lonely or frustrated by writing to them. Lately, I've just been saying hi or not writing at all, but, yeah; I do write about some of my thoughts to my favorite villagers.

I usually write down the dreams I have had the nignt before in my letters.

I wouldn't say my letters are heartfelt most of the time but I do try to have fun with it just in case they share the letters with other people.
"Dear Sparro, did you know that 15 minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance?"
"Dear Sterling, shiny objects are distracting aren't they? I bet that's why knights in shining armor are always beating dragons, it must be their distractingly shiny armor."
"Dear Drago, I do not taste good with ketchup, just thought you should know."

I made an exception for Fauna's leaving, I sent very heartfelt goodbye letter with hybrid roses.
