Well, I didn't learn it today, but a violist in my orchestra commented earlier that Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture op 26 is based on Mendelssohn's experience in Fingal Cave. The noodley sixteenth notes are supposed to represent the echoes of the cave he was in. Kind of cool!

Today I learned that GloFish are a thing and, to be quite honest, I'm not sure how I feel about it. They are definitely pretty and supposedly it's not painful to the fish because they are genetically modified as embryos versus less humane methods like being injected with harmful dyes. But I'd still prefer to keep animals natural. There are so many beautiful fish in all different colors anyway. I don't see a need for this.

I learned that former Japanese prime minister Junichiro Koizumi is a huge Elvis fan. He visited Graceland, where he met Priscilla and Lisa Marie, and even sang some of his songs. Strangely enough, he and Elvis have the same birthday (January 8th). His brother is also Senior Advisor of the Tokyo Elvis Fan Club. (or something like that?)

I learned that turning a chromebook off and back on when it’s frozen does NOT always fix it, nor does trying to recharge the battery. Now I have to either get it fixed or pay to replace it because it’s school property, and I don’t have $50-100 sitting around to do that.

I learned that there’s an owl sanctuary near me so I am going there in the Summer to do the Owl experience so I can handle and fly some Owls - hopefully an Snowy Owl like Hedwig!

I learned a few Japanese phrases from playing Tomodachi Collection:
1. "itadaki masu" is saying thank you to someone who prepared a meal/snack for you
2. "arigato gozaimashi-ta" is thanking a customer for buying something as they're leaving (it's past tense, present tense would be "gozaimasu")

feel free to rip on my Japanese language ability lol I don't know much

also had to put a dash in the middle of that word bc the forum censors were not having it lmaooooo

1. "konbanwa" is good evening
2. "irasshaimase" is welcome (to a store/shop)
3. "okaiage arigato gozaimasu" is thank you for your purchase

if I keep playing Tomodachi Collection I might just learn to actually speak japanese haha

I was watching a compilation of all the Hotel Mario cutscenes and I just found out that the sound effect for when you enter the bowser fights in SM64 is actually taken from one of the cutscenes.

it's at the 2:40 mark, someone points it out in the comments but I noticed it as soon as I heard it. that honestly blows my mind that one of the greatest games ever made took a sound effect (and thus has an easter egg) from probably the worst Super Mario game ever lmaooo

I accidentally ran into a rock with a mushroom on the Animal Crossing track on Mario Kart, and coins came out of the rock!! The attention to detail on that stage is amazing. I never knew the mechanics were that accurate, lol.

I've learned that zydeco is actually a music genre.

Initially when I played New Horizons, I was confused on what 'zydeco' means whenever Wilbur mentions it in the dialogue. Only for me to find out now that it is a type of music genre.

I learned that 'sayonara' doesn't actually mean "goodbye" in Japanese...it literally means "if that's the way it is", or "if it is to be that way"...the nuance of which, I find one million times more valuable than the English equivalent (of which there is basically none).

I did just look it up and apparently it's considered rude in most cases and most tend not to use it because it implies they don't intend/want to see the other person(s) anymore.

This apparently existed... Had no idea but someone tried to order albanian with greek alphabet from us and we were ??? first.. I don't think we keep it still but, very interesting!

Yeah it's more used as a formal farewell thing and "mata ne" or stuff is better used if you want to see them again :3

I learned that the there's always going to be one AI in Mario Kart that is coded to rake up the most points and compete against the human players. Had to look it up when I just saw some cpu just phase in from nowhere like they lagged into existence.

They get a bit ridiculous with the item favoring though. Saw one in 2nd place get a bullet bill. Thought that one was given to players in the lower ranks.

It was a few days ago but I ran into a video about how to sun dry raw meat (Native American method). It was pretty interesting and well, a good skill to know.
